Sponsor Spotlight: RenovationFind

Feb 13, 2020

We’re excited to have RenovationFind as a sponsor of the 2020 BC Home + Garden Show. Before you visit this innovative company at BC Place February 19-23, please enjoy our brief interview with the RenovationFind team below.

RenovationFind Team standing at the show

Q: How does your service work?

RenovationFind.com is a free online directory of certified trades, contractors, and home improvement companies. All companies listed on our website www.renovationfind.com have gone through a stringent pre-screening process. Using a third-party organization, we run extensive background checks on seven of the most important criteria so we can provide homeowners with legitimate, reputable, and trustworthy companies. The criteria include legal background checks, credit background checks, monitoring for customer complaints, checking for proof of a valid business license and insurance, as well as WCB coverage. Companies who are a member of the Better Business Bureau will receive a higher ranking on the directory. We continue to monitor the companies based on these criteria to ensure they’re keeping up to standard.

RenovationFind helps protect homeowners by offering them a directory of ethical, trustworthy home renovation, and home improvement companies. We also are focused on promoting good companies, on helping build a positive reputation for the renovation industry. It’s a win-win for both the consumer and the businesses involved.

RenovationFind Certified Logo

Q: What can we look forward to from you at the BC Home and Garden Show?

At the Home and Garden show, we will have a booth where people can come and learn more about RenovationFind. It will allow for homeowners to receive credible information and get three quotes from companies certified by RenovationFind. For example, if they are looking to have their bathroom remodeled, we can give them the information they need and a quote for the project. As well, there will be a giveaway for becoming a RenovationFind member. Not only will they receive exclusive pricing or any promotions from recommended, certified businesses, but they will can enter to win $1000 and an iPad at the booth.

Q: What advice do you have for homeowners?

The most important part of any project is to do thorough research. Having a plan written down with guidelines and the proper permits will make sure the project goes smoothly. It’s also important to do background checks on any company before you hire them. Check their credentials and previous work to make sure they have a good reputation. Asking for documentation is within your rights before any work is done on your house. A tip when asking for references is to ask for a reference on the previous three jobs the company has done. This way, you will get a more honest picture of the company because they won’t simply give you the jobs they know will give the best reference. Ask that previous customer how the project went, if the documentation was valid, and any other questions you may have before making your decision about working with the company.

Q: What inspires your services?

The horror stories. You hear of so many homeowners working with unreliable companies who will take money without completing work, or take advantage of their lack of knowledge. Providing a service like this ensures that homeowners know they will get quality service from the company they choose, and won’t regret their decision. The companies on the site are trustworthy and reputable, and that’s what matters when hiring someone to work in your home.

Q: What is your favourite part of the BC Home and Garden Show?

Connecting with other homeowners and giving them a resource for hiring contractors and home improvement companies. If we are connecting homeowners to the people who can get the job done right, both parties win. Doing the booth at the home show allows us to help make these connections.

RenovationFind Booth at the Show

Q: What design or decor trends did you love in 2019 or anticipate for 2020?

People are renovating instead of moving. Many homeowners don’t want to leave, because perhaps they have found their forever home, or have fallen in love with the neighborhood and their community. Instead they’re choosing to renovatet he home they’re in. Because we’re in the home renovation industry, this is something we hope to continue to see.

Q: Are there any success stories you'd like to share?

Based on homeowner feedback, we have found that many homeowners are finding success through using the site. The pre-screening process, combined with the continuous monitoring, has taken a lot of stress out of the renovation process for our users. We are also able to advertise our companies to their target demographics, and attract new customers to their RenovationFind profiles and websites. Because of this, the good companies on our directory are getting more leads.

Q: What can folks expect when they work with you?

For the homeowner, people who use RenovationFind can expect quality workmanship and service from the company they choose to hire. For those who choose to sign up for a RenovationFind membership, they’ll get exclusive prices and promotions for companies in their area. Homeowners will find contractors over a wide range of categories, including general contractors, siding contracts, kitchen contractors, Vancouver countertops, painters, electrical companies in Vancouver, HVAC companies, Vancouver window companies and more.

In regards to the companies on the directory, we try to improve traffic to their RenovationFind profiles and their websites using specific targeting in their city. We do this through membership email blasts, blog posts, social media marketing, and search engine targeting. We love to see our companies get more leads and business through our marketing efforts.

Gardening for Beginners: 3 Tips to Get Started

Feb 12, 2020
With warmer weather on the way, now is the perfect time to start thinking about your garden. Not much of a green thumb? No problem! We’ve got three simple tips to help get you started. Are you ready to watch your garden grow? Read on.

Garden Supplies

1. It’s All in the Mix
When picking up bulbs from your local garden center or nursery be sure to select a good mix of annuals and perennials. Fill your plots with bright pops of color that will fade with the end of the season and flowers that will bloom again next year.

2. Maintain
While you may not have the interest or free time to dedicate hours every day to your garden, do make regular gardening part of your schedule. Maintenance is key to a successful garden.

3. Patience is a Virtue
It’s important to remember, especially if this is your first foray into gardening, that these things take time. Gardens do not sprout overnight. It could be weeks before you see your first bloom, but the wait is worth it. Be patient and watch your garden come to life.

Picking the Perfect Patio Furniture

Feb 12, 2020

Selecting the right patio furniture for your outdoor space has the power to transform it into a second living room in the warmer months. Designing a comfortable and inviting area that beckons you to step outside and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature is the goal. Here are some of the top tips for creating a relaxing oasis that will remain welcoming for years to come.

Perfect Patio Furniture

Let Your Life Speak — What do you really want to do with this space? Make a list of your favorite outdoor activities and let that knowledge guide your purchasing decisions. If you host many dinner parties, consider a dining set for balmy summer nights. If you’re more likely to be found curled up with a good book, a chaise lounge, hammock, rocker or recliner might be in order. Remember a fire pit for cooler autumn evenings never goes out of style (plus, it’s great for making s’mores)!

Comfort First – Make sure to take a seat before you pull out your credit card. Comfortable seating will be used so much more often than hard, uncomfortable selections. Bring your kids along for this shopping trip – they’ll be quick to tell you where they want to take a nap!

Skip the Headache – You want to maximize your time loving your new hang out, not trying to keep it in one piece. More often than not, cedar, wrought iron and teak pieces can withstand nature’s mood swings. Plus, furniture made from these materials will continue to look nice as the years roll by. On the other hand, plastic resin pieces may become brittle over time, cheap wood products eventually take a beating from the sun and aluminum chairs can blow away with a strong wind.

Space Invaders – You can add years to the life of your patio furniture by storing it in a protected location like a garage or basement during colder months. However, if that’s not a possibility, look for the kind of furniture that folds up easily or can be taken apart for compact storage.

Bring the Indoors Outside – Don’t forget to buy a beautiful all-weather rug! Many quick-dry choices exist that are soft on bare feet as well as visually appealing. A rug will complete the look of your patio space and add some extra luxury.

Perfect Patio Furniture

Works Hard for the Money – Make the most of your patio by selecting hardworking furniture. For example, an ottoman that doubles as a storage container will be the perfect place to keep books, towels or a checkerboard safe when a thunderstorm strikes. Likewise, your favorite bench can serve double duty as an extra spot to place food during parties.

Measure Twice, Cut Once – Remember to consider how much space you have to work with and how it’s shaped before you buy furniture. Treat your patio like any other room in your home and measure the areas before you shop. If your space is on the smaller side, consider a bistro-style table and accompanying chairs for al fresco dining. Make sure to leave enough space around the perimeters for people to be able to walk around comfortably no matter what you choose!

3 Ideas For Your Outdoor Living Space

Feb 12, 2020

Before you know it, grass will be green, bees will be buzzing and your attention will be fully focused on sprucing up the backyard. Here are a few ideas to reinvent your outdoor oasis before spring arrives:

Spring Flower

Pollinator Garden: Now more than ever, it is important to provide pollinators, like honeybees, with flowering plants to pollinate. Our suggestion is to implement a raised bed in an existing flowerbed. That way you can include indigenous Midwest flowers in a contained space. It’ll keep your bed from looking messy and disorganized, all while providing a much-needed resource for bees, butterflies and even hummingbirds!

Pond-Less Water Features: Dreaming of a sunlit pond with water lilies and dragonflies? The expense and time required to dig a water feature and landscape it is substantial, which is why alternate water features are growing in popularity. Small fountains are an easy way to create the sound of trickling water. Electric birdbaths take an old classic into the modern era with jets of water and moving currents.

Fire Pits: As outdoor living spaces continue to grow in complexity, a key element is having a fire to gather around. High-end shoppers can look at building stone fire pit, or even constructing gas-powered fireplaces. If your budget is tighter, any home improvement store will have a decent selection of portable fire pits. Regardless of what you choose, friends and neighbors will enjoy the ambience on chilly evenings.

Exhibitor Spotlight: Robert E. Beach Architects

Feb 11, 2020
Robert E. Beach Architects, LLC,  whom you can find in Booth #816 at the upcoming Capital Remodel + Garden Show, is a Falls Church, VA, architectural firm specializing in commercial, residential and institutional architecture and redevelopment strategies, with a focus on energy efficiency and sustainability.

Firm principal, Bob Beach, established Robert E. Beach Architects, LLC in 1989. He is well known for his work around the region but there is a historic site project that has his current attention. He is the architect of the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial and Gardens now in its construction phase in Occoquan Regional Park, Lorton, VA.

Bob reminds that Fairfax County has a significant history in the fight for women’s suffrage in the United States. In 1917, scores of suffragists were imprisoned in the Occoquan Workhouse for picketing the Woodrow Wilson White House for the right to vote.  The reports of inhumane conditions, beatings and force-feeding at the workhouse electrified the country and became a major turning point in the struggle to win the vote. Thus, the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial will be dedicated on the centennial anniversary of passage of the 19th Amendment, August 26, 2020.

Bob says, “The Turning Point Suffragist Memorial will be a visual symbol and educational tool to elevate these little-known women to their proper place in history for engineering the greatest expansion of democracy in a single day the world had ever seen.”

He explains that his design will allow visitors to experience the memorial from successive points of view. The journey will start at a replica street side plaza, reflective of the White House where the suffragists stood as “silent sentinels” picketing for women’s right to vote. Inside the gates, across the plaza, visitors will view the Suffragist Commemorative Wall that chronicles each woman jailed during this period. The central element of the plaza is a six-column rotunda with an entablature ring open to the sky symbolizing the principles and goals of the movement.

Bob says that the flow of the plaza plan form will be interrupted by a river rock arroyo symbolizing the chasm between women and men concerning voting rights and where the Turning Point Bridge immortalizes the events that became the watershed in the struggle.

Three bronze, life-sized statues of suffrage leaders will be included in the memorial, including Alice Paul, co-founder of the National Woman’s Party and author of the Equal Rights Amendment, Mary Church Terrell, co-founder of the NACCP, and professor Carrie Chapman Catt, president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and founder of the League of Women Voters. The courageous efforts of the suffragists are expressed along the Turning Point Plaza through 19 informational stations that curate the entire seventy year suffrage movement, 1848-1920.

Bob explains that the memorial is designed to stimulate thought and foster dialogue to promote humanitarian and democratic values through connections between the history of the suffragist movement and its contemporary implications.

Bird-Friendly Garden Tips from Garden Plot’s Mike McGrath

Feb 11, 2020
Mike McGrath, well known in the DC area as WTOP-FM’s garden editor, whose witty “Garden Plot” segments liven up the weekend, will be on the Capital Remodel + Garden Show’s Main Stage on Saturday February 22 and Sunday, February 23.

While spring is right around the corner, Mike says our feathered friends still need a little help in the garden before the weather takes a turn for the better. Mike offers some wonderful tips that will bring great activity and color to a garden in the most natural way. Consider the following to help take care of the natural birds in late winter gardens:

This weather is for the birds! Yes, the birds that spend the winter in our region do have many physical abilities that help them survive — they isolate the blood supply in their legs so it doesn’t chill the rest of their body; by keeping their feathers clean, they create an insulating blanket of warm air next to their body; they snuggle up with others of their species; and their high metabolism helps keep them warm.

Rendered beef fat — yum! Although feeding wild birds in the spring and summer can have negative consequences, feeding them during the cold days and nights of late fall and winter is good for the birds, and your garden, if you provide the right kind of food, and in a word, that’s suet.

In its most basic form, suet is a square cake of rendered beef fat, sized to fit into standard suet holders — metal cages that swing open to receive the suet cake and then snap shut to hold it in place. The cages can be nailed to a tree or hung from branches or shepherds’ hooks.

Suet now means fewer pests next summer. Suet feeders, however, pose no such problems; in fact, they have a wonderful and unexpected side benefit. By placing lots of these feeders around your landscape, you’ll attract the best of the pest-eating birds, like chickadees, wrens, swallows, vireos and woodpeckers — just to name a few of the birds whose spring and summer diet consists of 85 percent or more of insect pests.

Suet cakes are the perfect winter substitute for those bad bugs, so hang lots of ‘em around your plants. Then stop refilling them when spring bulbs appear. The birds will not go away; they’re already nesting and raising a family at your place and will quickly turn their attention to eating your awakening insect foes.

The right stuff. Feed the right birds with the right food now and those birds will make nests, lay their eggs and feed their hungry little babies with your garden pests in the spring and summer.

The right food is suet — available wherever any kind of bird food is sold. There are many “flavors” out there (some cakes have added nuts, dried fruits and the like), so look at the ingredient list. You want the cakes with the highest amounts of fat and protein.

Stale bread is for stuffing, not birds. Whatever you do, do not feed stale (or fresh) bread to your birds. Yes, they will eagerly eat it. And yes, it will quickly fill them up. But it is essentially devoid of the fat and protein they need to make it through winter. Feeding nothing at all is much better for your birds than feeding them bread.

The Steamboat Springs, Colorado-native now lives in New Jersey in the home that his Scottish grandfather owned. George speaks proudly of his grandfather’s rise from immigrant to successful New Jersey businessman.

George started his remodeling career as a teenager doing projects. He began in house painting learning to sand walls before ever picking up a paint brush. He says that his passion for remodeling began when he was a film and TV student in New York building stage sets.

His great joy with George To The Rescue is in making people’s lives better. The homes that are remodeled on his show are those owned by families and persons in great need. Home and Bath Trends for 2020

Feb 10, 2020

Bathroom Style

Darker, bolder bathroom accents - Grey has been trending for several years and now you can expect to see it moving in an even darker direction with black fixtures and accent tiles...especially in matte. This works with contemporary designs as well as classic white-dominant bathrooms.

Amenity-driven bathrooms - It's easier and more affordable than ever to bring spa-like components into your bathroom. There are "smart" toilets, steam showers, Alexa-compatible lights and waterproof sound systems to transform your bathroom into a relaxing oasis.

The return of the tub - Modern bathrooms have shifted away from having a full soaking tub in recent years. That changes in 2020. People want to destress and nothing is better for that than a deep tub. Expect to see large tubs as a focal point in bathroom design.

Bathroom

Kitchen Upgrades

Stone slab backsplashes - Tile has been the go-to backsplash for a while. Now, you'll begin to see marbles and granites bringing style and personality to the back of your kitchen and not just your countertops.

Asymmetrical kitchen islands - Islands take up a large amount of room in the kitchen and designers are opting to create custom, asymmetrical options to better suit the flow of the room and needs of the homeowner. Works best in modern, open concept kitchens.

Planning Your Home Improvement Project Budget

Feb 10, 2020

The Cincinnati Home & Garden Show is a great resource to help plan your next home project and to connect with hundreds of home improvement experts. Before you go to the show, it’s helpful to have a solid plan for your project.

Here are some helpful hints on preparing fully:

• Measure your space! Come to your vendors with exact dimensions so you can let a contractor know that the bathroom is currently 8x11. This information will help provide a better, more realistic budget for the project.

• Bring aspirational photos from projects you like. Create a Pinterest board for your new project with paint colors, tile patterns, countertop materials and more. Load them on your phone and show them to the exhibitors you are talking to so they can get you the info you need about materials.

• Know your budget. Do research and consult your financial planner ahead of time so you can have a productive meeting with your contractors. See below for a chart that provides rough budget guidelines for projects.

• Take the time during you visit to the show to get quotes and estimates and be sure to enquire about show deals and promos. Often exhibitors will have special promotions for show attendees which can help your bottom line.

Now that you are set with your inspiration, measurements, and your budget, we’ll see you at the show!

Get Cooking Tips and Advice from Julia Collin Davison

Feb 04, 2020

The San Antonio Home & Garden Show is excited to welcome Julia Collin Davison to the Main Stage to share some of her cooking tips and advice during her educational cooking presentations.

Julia Collin Davison is the executive editorial director for America’s Test Kitchen and co-hosts PBS’s “America’s Test Kitchen” and “Cook’s Country” – two of the highest-rated instructional cooking shows on television. Not only do they provide some of the best recipes for home cooks, but they also help viewers understand what to look for when buying everything from kitchen gear to ingredients. Their unique and rigorous recipe testing process stands at the core of the test kitchen’s mission. To begin, they first survey their readers and viewers to choose a recipe and then test that recipe anywhere from 25 to 50 times – that’s some dedication!

Julia and her team test recipes, products and more to ensure that America’s Test Kitchen provides the most efficient way to cook any recipe! From finding the easiest way to chop an onion to testing trendy new kitchen equipment and appliances, you can trust that America’s Test Kitchen will provide you with the best tips and advice.

One of her all-time favorite meals that they have tested is Roast Chicken. To test this recipe, they might roast six chickens at slightly different oven temperatures just to see what the effects are of temperature when roasting a chicken. And that doesn’t even go into the details of the best seasonings, ways to prep a chicken and the rest of the cooking process! They make sure to include both old-time favorites like “the best meatloaf” and meals that may be more adventurous to the home chef and present it all in a way that is honest, respectful and makes the best use of ingredients that anyone can get at the supermarket.

Julia is known for her delicious recipes (that have been tested and tested to perfection) and insightful home cooking tips and has been a fan favorite for 16 seasons! So, whether you’re a fan of the show or just looking for some culinary advice, she’s sure to impress you during her time on stage at the San Antonio Home & Garden Show! You can find her on the main stage Friday, February 28 and Saturday, February 29. Don’t miss it!

The Benefits of a Glo Dome

Feb 04, 2020

The 40th Anniversary of the San Antonio Home & Garden Show is right around the corner, and this year is a special one when it comes to design and innovation in homebuilding and travelling. Glo Domes, a company that we are excited to host, is on the cutting edge of architecture, comfort and entrepreneurship!

A Glo dome is a geodesic structure that minimizes the use of materials and maximizes your ability to set it up and establish it in any environment. Since its shape is both conducive for withstanding the elements and giving the best views, a Glo dome can be used to take glamping to the next level, for durable year-round accommodations, for outdoor events and more.  The unique style and design of these buildings has some great benefits when it comes to both homeowners and enthusiasts:

  1. Energy Efficiency: Did you know that the sphere is nature’s most efficient shape? Building a structure in a dome shape uses less materials and exposes less of your structure’s surface area to the outside elements. Going green was never so easy!

  2. Wind and Snow Resistant: There is a reason that Glo Domes were created and thrive in the Rocky Mountain region! Since dome structures have fewer flat surfaces, wind and other elements move around and settle more evenly around the structure rather than face forces flush against a flat surface. Some dome structures can even withstand hurricane-force wind depending on the situation and building.

  3. Crowd Pleaser: With the dome being underutilized in the building market, choosing a dome-style structure or house is a guaranteed way to promote your uniqueness to those around you! If you are looking at Glo Domes as a potential rental property opportunity, there is nothing that would set you apart and generate buzz more than a dome-shaped property.

From bare bones domes to a fully outfitted lodge or event space, Glo Domes can be there every step of the way. Join them on the main stage on Friday and Sunday as they share their emerging brand!

Celebrity Spotlight - Kevin O'Connor

Feb 03, 2020

Kevin O’Connor will be the celebrity guest presenter at this year’s Southern Spring Home & Garden Show, which runs February 28 to March 1 and March 6 to 8 at The Park Expo and Conference Center in Charlotte. Kevin has been the host of
hit PBS programs This Old House and Ask This Old House for 17 years.

Kevin O'Connor

A former bank executive, he came to his current post in the most unusual of ways. He and his wife, both longtime fans of the shows, purchased an old home and submitted an inquiry to appear on an episode of Ask This Old House. Their home was featured in
a wallpaper removal project segment. After the episode, the producers of the shows approached O’Connor about becoming the third host in This Old House’s history.

Since then, he has been nominated for an Outstanding Service Show Host Emmy Award for his debut season on the show. He is an avid traveler, a TV show host on PBS and DIY Network, the author of “The Best Homes From This Old House” and serves
on the editorial board of This Old House Magazine.

Can’t wait to see Kevin at the Southern Spring Home & Garden Show? We caught up with him to answer a few of our burning questions in advance!

Q: What is a common mistake homeowners make when they take on a home improvement project themselves?

Kevin: Without fail, they underestimate the time and money it will take and overestimate the amount of work they want to do themselves. I guess we’re all optimists when it comes to renovation when we should all be skeptics.

Q: Where do you go online to find inspiration?

Kevin: I read more than I watch online. I consume a lot of news despite how painful that is these days. I also like long-form articles and non-fiction writing that blows your mind with new ideas and stories of people changing the world.

Q: Would you rather upgrade your closet, bathroom or kitchen?

Kevin: The kitchen, without question. It’s the heart of the home where everyone gathers and where all our time is spent. A dollar spent there gets the biggest return in my opinion. Put your money where your life is.

Q: What are your best outdoor décor tips?

Kevin: Use a lot of natural materials like wood and stone, pump up the color and pay attention to lighting. Good lighting draws you outside, keeps you outside and lets you enjoy the outside from the inside. And make sure there’s fire.

For more inspiration, check out the This Old House website, or find O’Connor on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Make sure you catch one of O’Connor’s talks on the Main Stage at the Southern Spring Home & Garden Show on Friday, Feb. 28, or Saturday, Feb. 29!
