MasonJarElf_2

Supplies
  • Mason jar (empty)
  • Small, light green goodies (we used jellybeans, but you can also try M&Ms)
  • 3-4 Pom poms (we chose grey and white)
  • Red felt
  • Ribbon
  • Glue gun

Directions

Step 1: Plug in your glue gun and let it heat up.
Step 2: Glue your pom poms on the mason jar. Spacing, size of pom poms, and amount used are up to you. We chose four grey and white pom poms to keep things simple.
Step 3: Cut your felt into triangle shapes to look like an elf collar.
Step 4: Glue the felt around your mason jar.
Step 5: Fill the mason jar with your green goodies.
Step 6: Put the lid on and tie a ribbon around it.
Step 7: Give to folks who need some holiday cheer.

We hope this craft helps you this holiday season. For more festive ideas, and general home improvement project advice, be sure to follow @homeshows on Instagram and Twitter and Like Us on Facebook

Baking 101: Simple Tips Worth Trying

Dec 03, 2019
With relatives coming in from out of town, children off school and in need of entertaining, shopping to do, gifts to wrap, and so much more, it’s very easy to ruin your holiday cookies. Baking is a science and when you add in a distraction (or ten) treats don’t always come out as planned. To help you avoid baking woes this holiday season, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite culinary hacks. Check them out below, and get ready to whip up goodies your family will love.

Christmas Cookie

Dough Must-Do’s
• Chill cookie dough before rolling. This will give you an opportunity to wrap a gift, or watch a holiday favorite with your little ones (we recommend A Muppet Christmas Carol).
• Roll smaller rather than larger pieces of dough; keep unrolled dough chilled until you’re ready to work with it. In addition to better baking, this will also help you keep your mess contained and make clean up simpler.
• Bake and cool three or four test cookies before baking the whole batch. If you have made a mistake (like not adding enough butter or sugar), test cookies will let you know and can save you from throwing out a lot of cookies.

Christmas Cookie

Rolling Tips
• Roll out your dough and cut cookies directly onto a sheet of parchment to fit your cookie sheet. This is a great idea if you’ve got little ones helping – it can be hard to delicately move a piece of cut cookie dough onto a cookie sheet, so take it out of the equation and cut right onto the sheet.
• Leave enough space between cut shapes for the cookies to spread when baked. Spoken from experience. We’ve had Christmas trees turn into giant blobs. Much less festive than intended.
• The bigger the cutter, the simpler your cookie will be to decorate. Again, if you’re baking with little ones, this is a must-do. Plus, you end up with a bigger cookie to eat! We hope you and yours have a wonderful and delicious holiday season!

For more home tips, be sure to visit your nearest Marketplace Events home show. We can’t wait to see you there!

Festive Style: A Guide to Wreaths

Dec 01, 2019
Whatever the holiday or season you’re celebrating, wreaths are a great way to add some festive flair to your space – inside and out. Deck your front door, back door, tables and more. With winter upon us, now is the perfect time to find a wreath (or two) to brighten up your home. Check out some of our favorite styles below and get ready to be inspired.

Traditional
Oranges, cinnamon, cranberries, and cloves – this is a wreath that would make Charles Dickens proud. Hung on your door, we’re sure you’ll have a few spirits come to show you the true meaning of Christmas.

Traditional Wreath

Boxwood Beauty
This bowed boxwood is a more modern creation. Ideal for warmer climates, its simple style will add some festive fun to your porch without going overboard.

Boxwood Beauty

Frosty
Dreaming of a white Christmas? Put this angelic creation on your mantel. Sparkling silver and knotted wood make this wreath the perfect fit for your space all winter long.

Frosty

Natural
Love going for long winter walks in the woods? This is the wreath for you. Fir branches, large pinecones, and stunning red ribbon highlight the natural beauty winter brings.

Natural

Ornamental
Another indoor wreath, this purple piece uses ornaments as well as natural elements for its festive style. Try using it as a centerpiece for one of your holiday get-togethers.

Ornamental

We hope these wreaths help inspire your holiday décor. For more festive ideas and great tips year-round, follow @HomeShows on Twitter and Instagram and Like Us on Facebook.

Meet Our headliners! Plus 3 tips for kicking off your DIY project from HGTV Canada Celebrity Contractor Bryan Baeumler

Nov 20, 2019

The Winnipeg Renovation Show is approaching and we’re excited to be welcoming one of HGTV Canada’s hottest stars, presented by RBC. Bryan Baeumler ofIsland of Bryan is returning to the HGTV Canada Lifestyle Stage this winter, presented by Kat Reno. Joining Bryan is local talent, with tips and tricks for everything from bathroom renos, to selecting the best furniture for your home. You won’t want to miss this stellar lineup, so make sure to get your tickets for the upcoming Winnipeg Renovation Show at the RBC Convention Centre from January 10-12, 2020.

Canada’s favourite handyman, Bryan Baeumler, has been living in the Bahamas with his family, where he has recently finished filming season 2 of HGTV Canada's Island of Bryan. Viewers watched the crew restore a small abandoned resort on South Andros Island throughout season 1 in record numbers, and you can get the chance to see him at the Winnipeg Renovation Show in person! To give a preview of what’s to come, Bryan has shared some key tips for a successful DIY project.

1. Set your budget first. It’s impossible to come up with a plan for a project until you have decided how much you want or are able to spend.

2. Plan your project. The more decisions you make before starting, the smoother your project will go. This includes drawings, selecting materials and finishes, lighting, plumbing fixtures etc. Having everything chosen, ordered and on site before you get started helps keep you organized and less stressed when it’s time to get to work.

3. Be prepared to change the plan! Don’t beat yourself up when you find something unexpected or decide to make some changes mid-project. It’s okay to change your mind or veer off course a little. Enjoy the process and keep your eyes on the prize!

Learn all this and more during Bryan’s HGTV Canada Lifestyle Stage presentations, Friday, January 10 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, January 11 at 1 p.m.

Stay tuned for the full HGTV Canada Lifestyle Stage schedule and get excited to see local favourites join Bryan at this year’s Winnipeg Renovation Show! Prepare by getting your tickets ahead of time to save $2, courtesy of All Canadian Renovations!

Sponsor Spotlight: Universal Windows Direct

Nov 18, 2019

We're excited to announce that Universal Windows Direct is sponsoring the 2020 Cleveland Home + Remodeling Expo, March 20-22, 2020 at the I-X Center. We caught up with the Universal Windows Direct team ahead of our event to talk about their products, plans for 2020, and what folks can expect from them at the show. Enjoy our brief interview below.

Please describe your products.

"Universal Windows Direct is a complete home improvement company. We offer replacement windows, entry doors, vinyl siding and roofing. All of our products are of the highest-quality, designed to enhance and protect the integrity of each home we engage with."

What can we look forward to from you at the Cleveland Home + Remodeling Expo?

"People who attend this year’s show can expect a truly personal experience. Our two-story booth allows us the space to fully engage with our customers, address their concerns, display our products, and showcase the unique qualities of our company. Strengthened by these qualities, the trust of our customers, and community, has been achieved."

What home design and decor trends are you anticipating for 2020?

"In 2020, we’re expecting the consumer to take a more active role. Meaning, people aren’t going to go into home improvements blindly, they’re going to do their research like never before. In doing so, we believe homeowners will understand the importance of investing in quality, distinctive products that will add deep, lasting value to the home, while not simply settling for the least expensive option."

What inspires your products?

"Our products are literally inspired by our customers. We actively, and persistently listen to our customers. Our customers not only desire aesthetically pleasing products, they need to save money on their energy bills. This means our products need to be both energy-efficient, and beautiful. Our focus is always on adapting our products to fit our customers’ need. Otherwise, why bother?"

What is your favorite part of the Cleveland Home + Remodeling Expo?

"We LOVE the people!! It’s a genuine gift to be able to meet and interact with such a wide variety of people. No two stories are ever the same. People need help and they trust us to be the experts. That’s a huge responsibility that we don’t take lightly. We’re honored to be able to help these people. They are part of our community, therefore, they’re an extension of us. We are here to serve the people, while providing an unmatched customer experience. And guess what, that means having fun, caring and loving what we do. Win-Win!"

What advice would you give homeowners?

"We advise homeowners to take their time. Do their homework. Discover what product will truly benefit their home now, and for years to come. Quality home improvements are a great investment, but they are an investment. Make sure you’re setting your home up for long-term success with quality of product, paired with a warranty that affords you peace of mind for the lifetime of your home."

What is your creative process like?

"Our creative process is very team-oriented. We are very close-knit at UWD, and there is a whole cast of characters that reside in the walls of our offices. Most of us are homeowners as well. So, we’re in an interesting situation…we’re the company and the customer. We form conclusions based on prior success, but we’re constantly building upon that success, learning from past mistakes, listening to & respecting each other, while consistently encouraging new ideas. The innovations of our fellow employees are key. We are then able to gain and produce solutions that work for the universal consumer."

Keep It Simple! With C&J Water And C&J Well Co.

Nov 12, 2019

On his hit show Kitchen Nightmares, Chef Gordon Ramsey definitely brings the drama. The show features a failing restaurant that has petitioned Gordon for help turning the business around. If you’ve ever seen an episode, it is filled with staged melodrama, extensive nervous breakdowns, elaborate twists and turns, and, unfortunately, profanity-laced tirades from Ramsey. One consistent theme among these quagmires is Ramsey’s admonition to, “Keep it simple!” Chefs often overload and overcomplicate their menus, because there are so many dishes they enjoy cooking. This tendency leads to all sorts of problems like waste, less content consumers, more stress and work for staff, and brand confusion..

C and J Water

Your visit to the Indianapolis Home Show has the potential to be like one of Ramsey’s Nightmare kitchens—too many options on the menu can lead to information overload and hamstring wise-decision making.

C&J’s advice? Keep it simple and go with the pros! We know water from the ground to your tap.

Water Treatment
At C&J Water, our treatment solutions can ensure you don’t have unwanted particles in your water. Our water softeners prevent mineral deposit build-up in appliances, while using less soap and detergents. A whole-house sediment filter is used to protect your water softening equipment and plumbing fixtures from larger particles that might come into your home. Our reverse-osmosis filtration system has several filters and membranes that remove organic and inorganic solids from your drinking water..
