Q&A WITH CELEB CARPENTER BRETT TUTOR

Feb 24, 2020

Brett Tutor is the handsome, charismatic carpenter on TLC’s hit series Trading Spaces. Before the show, he has been a home inspector, home flipper, contractor and even spent time as a rafting and rock-climbing guide for an adventure outfitter. With what seems to be an endless list of talents, we’re thrilled to have Brett here at the Nashville Home + Remodeling Expo!

[Insert Image]

We sat down with Brett and he answered some questions to help us get to know him better with some fun facts, along with some home and decor tips.

Q:  What’s an easy DIY project that homeowners can tackle to improve their space?
Brett: The easiest project that homeowners can tackle themselves is PAINT! Paint it and go nuts! Paint is a fun, quick way to makeover any room in a big way! And the risk is small. I am huge fan of new trowel on textures which can completely change the look and feel of a space. Educate yourself on VOCs if you haven't already and make sure to select a healthy paint!

Q:  What was the last picture you took with your phone?
Brett: The last picture I took on my phone was a screen shot of a quote that I saw and liked. "To have, you must do, to do you must be."

Q: If you had to move to another country, which would you pick and why?
Brett: If I had to move to another country it would definitely be Costa Rica. I spent the entire month of December there. It is heaven for us surfers, but I just love the people. The country’s motto kind of sums it up: "Pura Vida" (The Pure Life)

Q: What’s one thing we wouldn’t guess about you?
Brett: The one thing that you may not guess about me is that I used to absolutely hate carpentry. I had to do it when I was young. Life is so funny - now I’m doing it professionally and I absolutely love it now!

Q: What’s a common mistake that homeowners make when they take on a home improvement project themselves?
Brett: The most common mistake that I see homeowners do when taking on a home renovation is thinking that their renovation is going to go like the renovation that they just saw on TV! It will always, always take more time and more money than you think!

Q: The three things I can’t live without are:
Brett:
1. Friends
2. Family
3. Good coffee and good wine (to make four!)

Q:  What’s a must-have at any party you’re throwing?
Brett: A must have a party that I am throwing is GOOD MUSIC! That is all that really matters at a party if you ask me.

Q: What project have you been most proud to work on?
Brett: The work that I am the most proud of is some relief work I did in Panama. We built a birthing house and a bathroom in a very remote village in the jungles of Panama. The thought that a few babies and mothers have a had a little healthier environment to bring new life into this world has definitely been the most rewarding work I have done to date.

Q: Where do you go online to find inspiration?
Brett: Instagram, I love it. I love seeing images of innovative design ideas and wood working. It gets me inspire daily.

Q:  What’s one thing you wish every homeowner knew?
Brett: The one thing that I wish every homeowner knew was how to make their home safe and
healthy. From fire safety, home security to healthy air quality, it scares me that so many people are living in a home that may be harming them.

You can see Brett at the Nashville Home + Remodeling Expo on Friday, March 13-15 live on our Main Stage. If you can’t wait check out Brett’s message to Nashville fans. Brett can be found online on his personal site and you can follow him on Twitter and on Instagram.

DIY Your Career

Feb 21, 2020

Do-It-Yourself projects are a hot topic these days and that even expands over into careers. It is no secret that employment rates in the trades are dropping, and skilled workers are badly needed. This year at the Home + Garden Show, show goers can learn all about the trade industry with Try a Trade, sponsored by EPS Homes and Hennepin Technical College (HTC).

Try A Trade

The Try a Trade exhibit will feature hands-on demonstrations of the role the trades play in home construction, including plumbing, HVAC systems, framing, carpentry and landscape design.

Hennepin Technical College will be on site to help people interested in learning more about the trades, and how getting the proper education will assist in finding employment. Many employers do require some formal training and HTC even has programs that can be completed in just six months.

HTC students will be at the Trade a Trade booth to talk with potential students about their DIY career path, opportunities and education. The booth was designed and built with influence from HTC students, to demonstrate what they learned in school.

If you’re set in your own career path, consider bringing a potential trade student with you to the show!

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: RENOVATIONFIND

Feb 20, 2020

We're excited to have RenovationFind as a sponsor of the 2020 Edmonton Home and Garden Show. Before you visit this innovative company at the Edmonton Expo Centre from March 19-22, please enjoy our brief interview with the RenovationFind team below.

Q: How does your service work?

RenovationFind is a free online directory of certified contractors, trades, and home renovation companies. Businesses found on the website are rated based on a third-party screen process. The screening includes legal and credit checks, verifying proof of insurance and a valid business licenses, and it monitors customer feedback. Companies that are a part of the Better Business Bureau will get a higher rating on the directory. The companies on the website are continuously monitored to ensure they’re keeping up to our high standards.   RenovationFind helps homeowners find reliable services for their renovation projects. We also promote good companies that consumers can trust. Both customers and the companies benefit from RenovationFind.

Q: What can we look forward to from you at the Edmonton Home and Garden Show?

At the Edmonton Home and Garden Show, we will have a booth where people can come and learn more about us and what we do. We are encouraging people to post their projects with us, so we can get them quotes from relevant contractors for those projects. For example, if they need help with a bathroom project, we will send the details of their project to three bathroom renovation companies. Those companies will then contact the homeowner for more information and give them an accurate quote for the project.

We’re also excited to be offering a fun contest at our booth! If you sign up for a RenovationFind membership, you’ll be entered to win $1000 and an iPad. Plus, members receive exclusive promotions and discounted pricing from our partner companies.

Q: What advice do you have for homeowners?

Research, Research. Research. You should also do thorough research on any company before you hire them to work in your house. Check their credentials, ask for references, ask to see a business license and proof of insurance. Get all quotes and contracts in detail and in writing before agreeing to any work.

When asking for references, ask for the last three jobs they completed. In doing this, the company won’t be able to choose their three very best references, so you’ll get a more honest picture of the company this way.

Q: What inspires your services?

Working in the home renovation industry through another business, we were constantly hearing horror stories from homeowners working with bad contractors. People were getting taken advantage of, and it was causing a lot of stress and often, leaving a financial burden. Providing homeowners with honest contractors who provide high-quality work and customer service will help stop that from happening. Not only is it better for homeowners, it helps improve the reputation of the renovation industry too.

Q: What is your favourite part of the Edmonton Home and Garden Show?

Meeting homeowners and helping them to connect with renovation companies that can help them with their projects. Connecting the two with each other helps both parties out, and that is really what we want to do.

Q: What design or decor trends did you love in 2019 or anticipate for 2020?

When speaking to homeowners at the different shows like this one, we are seeing that most people are choosing to fix up their current home instead of selling and moving into a new house. People are looking for their forever home, and tailor-making it to fit the needs of their family. Whether it’s a small or large project, it’s been wonderful to watch people make changes to their home for their long-term stay.

Q: Are there any success stories you'd like to share?

Based on customer feedback, homeowners have been quite pleased with the RenovationFind directory of certified companies. Having access to pre-screen renovation companies takes out the stress of a renovation, because people know that the companies they are working with are trustworthy and will get the project done properly. For the companies, we promote their services to their target demographic, and help them get qualified leads through their profile on the RenovationFind website.

Q: What can folks expect when they work with you?

Homeowners that use our site can expect that they will be getting a company or contracting service that does quality work, and that they can trust with their home projects. Becoming a member of RenovationFind gives homeowners exclusive, discounted pricing and promotions from recommended companies in their city. There are numerous categories on our site, including general contractors, window installation, Edmonton landscape companies, painters, basement renovations, home additions, HVAC Companies in Edmonton, bathroom contractors, deck builders in Edmonton and more!

For the companies, promoting them to homeowners in their demographic is a huge priority. Their content and service details are passed on to homeowners through email blasts, blog postings, search engine targeting and social media marketing.

The Edmonton Home and Garden Show is your source for trusted home experts, like RenovationFind. Join us at the Edmonton Expo Centre March 19-22 to get great ideas for your space and see HGTV's Boise Boys, Luke Caldwell + Clint Robertson (appearing on the Main Stage Friday and Saturday). We can't wait to see you at the show!

Spring Cleaning: Home Maintenance Musts

Feb 20, 2020
With winter weather behind us and spring temperatures consistent and warm, it’s important to make sure your home is ready for the change in seasons. As you organize your closet, putting away sweaters and bringing out shorts, consider adding the following items to your spring cleaning list. These five simple chores are often overlooked, but can have a big impact on your home. Check ‘em out below and get your space ready for summer.

Garden

1. Gutters and Downspouts – Everyone may be familiar with the adage April showers bring May flowers, but we can see a lot of rain throughout the spring and summer. Make sure your gutters are clear of debris so they can handle precipitation. Remove leaves, sticks, and rubbish to allow water to pass through them. Blocked gutters can cause water to overflow and damage your roof. Additionally, make sure your downspouts extend well away from your home so the water your gutters are collecting doesn’t seep into your foundation.

2. Roof - Now that the snow has melted off your roof, grab a ladder (and a friend!) or a pair of binoculars and see what shape it’s in. Are your shingles in good condition? Pay close attention to the area around your chimney, as winter’s freeze/thaw cycle can be especially hard on your flashings.

3. Foundation – In addition to extending your downspout, inspect the area around your home. Is the ground sloping toward or away from your property? Are your window wells collecting water? Doing everything you can to keep water from pooling around your home will help to keep your basement dry.

Pro Tip – Walk around your home right after a heavy rainfall to see where water is pooling to fully assess your space.

4. Windows and Doors – Make sure your windows and doors are properly sealed to help with heat management and pest control. Simple caulking and crack repair can help ensure you don’t end up cooling the neighborhood this summer and can keep critters and bugs out.

Roof

5. Smoke Detectors – You should test and change our smoke detector batteries approximately every six months. The change in seasons is a great reminder to tackle this vital task. You can also practice your evacuation techniques and go over other safety procedures.

Adding these maintenance items to your spring cleaning list will help keep your family and property comfortable this season. Think something is missing from our list? Share your maintenance musts with us on Twitter and Facebook. We’re always on the lookout for new tips!

As we wait for the Pet-A-Palooza and the weather starts to heat up again after the long weeks of winter, it’s good to remember all pets are susceptible to life-threatening illness and injuries due to overheating.  Jacksonville’s ACPS (Animal Care and Protective Services) has some warm weather tips for your pets:

High Temps

  • Provide your pets with plenty of fresh, clean water. Pets can become dehydrated quickly and can’t regulate their body temperature easily with their fur coats! Fresh water is a must.
  • Know and be on the lookout for overheating symptoms -- heavy panting, excessive drooling, increased/warm body temperature.
  • Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. The temperature inside the car can sky-rocket quickly while sitting in the sun.
  • Limit the time your pet is on hot asphalt/concrete which can injure or burn its paws. Consider taking your walks on grassy surfaces to save their paws.

 Rainy Days

When it’s raining cats and dogs, follow these tips from the City’s ACPS (Animal Care and Protective Services) team to keep the gray skies away:

  • Pets can get bored quickly if they can't go out for a walk or to play. Plan ahead by finding ways to entertain them and keep playing indoors
  • If they must go outside, keep them clear of large puddles, and thoroughly dry them, clean their paws and check their coat for any debris, upon your return indoors
  • Not all pets love fashion, but those that do have access to:
    • PET BOOTIES - You might want to consider pet water boots, particularly for dogs with furry paws
    • PET RAINCOAT - Raincoats designed for pets can be helpful, especially in downpours. Most are designed to cover the animal’s body, keeping them warm and their fur dry. (Make sure your pet is comfortable before using)
For more information on the city’s Animal Care and Protective Services department and adoptable pets, please visit them HERE. For more information on the Pet-A-Palooza and the show, please visit our site and join us in the courtyard of the Prime Osbourn Convention Center on March 7 to find your forever puppy!

Stand Tall and Bloom

Feb 17, 2020

Spring is around the corner, and soon you’ll be out in the fresh air and sunshine bringing your garden to life. The North Carolina Piedmont is famous for its clay-like soil. Fortunately, that soil is fertile enough for a wide variety of flowers to grow vibrantly. If you’re wondering what to plant during March and April, we’ve identified several options that thrive in our region of the Tar Heel State. These blossoms will add a pleasant pop of color to your backyard or front porch, welcoming in warm-weather visitors.

These classic garden staples bloom in mid-summer with numerous blue, pink, purple, red, white, yellow or black flowers on tall spikes. Many varieties are biennials, which means they complete their lifecycle over two years. Yet there are some varieties that act like short-lived perennials and bloom in the first year when planted early enough in the spring. These flowers serve as a host plant for the caterpillars that grow into painted lady butterflies and also attract bees and hummingbirds. They typically grow six to eight feet tall and require full sun to part shade. It’s a good idea to protect them from damaging winds by planting them against a fence, wall or trellis for support.

White speckles against a dark purple petal make this type of petunia look like pretty stars set against the night sky. A dramatic change of temperature between the day and night provides the celestial appearance for this flower, created by German breeder Selecta One. This means warm days and nights make the flowers predominantly purple, while cooler days and nights bring out the pops of white. They typically grow between 12 and 16 inches tall and bloom during the spring and summer. These annuals have wide, trumpet-shaped flowers and fair best in full sun with rich, moist and well-drained soil. Plant them after the last spring frost and consider placing them in hanging baskets to add charm to your porch.

Lantana plants are evergreens that are classified as shrubs by botanists and grow well in hanging pots due to their vine-like branches. Lantanas operate as perennials in warmer zones and annuals in colder zones, and the citrus-like aroma of their leaves qualifies them as fragrant plants. Their rounded clusters of bright yellow, orange, white, red and purple flowers are revered for their extended bloom time. They do best in sunny areas with slightly acidic soil and attract butterflies and hummingbirds to gardens. Plant them once the last of the spring frost has subsided and expect them to grow between six to eight feet high. Lantana plants like full or partial sun and thorough watering schedules. To encourage re-blooming, cut back the faded or dead flowers from these plants periodically.

Coreopsis

With names like “early sunrise” and “golden showers,” the bright yellow versions of coreopsis are cheerful and serene. Coreopsis is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant and long-blooming plant originating in the prairies and woodlands of North America. Birds like goldfinches love to snack on their seeds in the fall and winter, and bees and butterflies are drawn to them as well. Their petals may be bright yellow but also orange, pink and red. Plant them in the early spring for a summer bloom. They usually grow between 10 and 18 inches tall and take well to full sun or part shade conditions within well-draining, sandy soil.

Re-thinking Your Basement to Gain Living Space

Feb 17, 2020

Space is often at a premium in our homes and our experts at the Cincinnati Home + Garden Show are ready to help you find some lost space in your home. A prime example of this hidden living space is your basement! Often full of junk and holiday decorations just think about the extra living space just hiding down there.

Your basement can be used for all sorts of extra living space: a man cave with wet bar and home theater, a workout room and home gym, mother-in-law suite or even a games room for the kids. Utilizing your basement fully as additional living space can add up to 25% more living space to your home.

Before you begin planning, here are a few tips from Home Improvement Expert, Gary Sullivan:

• Clear the basement space of all non-essential items so you can dream and design how you want to best use the space for you and your family and friends.

• Make sure the area is dry and does not leak. Approach any necessary renovations first.

• Once the project is done and if you have a sump pump in the area make sure it has a backup sump pump for protection.

When you visit the Cincinnati Home & Garden Show, be sure to get started on the right foot by meeting with experts who specialize in water-proofing basements for an assessment before you begin design planning and get more living space out of your home.

What are your featured items this season?

Our most popular furniture collection is the Bayshore Collection but we see the new Marina Collection doing very well as it has new and refined modern lines with a retro twist! Modular Container Home in the woods

This Show feature was built in only 8 weeks one province away in Edmonton, AB using repurposed shipping containers. It is constructed of fully repurposed materials to lessen the environmental impact that goes into building a dream home. That is not the only thing this amazing company is doing to help our planet; every home built runs on 100% electricity which will in turn save you money. HONOMOBO specializes in seamless indoor/outdoor living so you can optimize the space you have and get the most out of your home. Immerse yourself in this beautiful single family home on the Show floor, fully furnished by La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries of Vancouver to see if modular home living is right for you. Now, here are 5 things you need to know about HONOMOBO modular homes, from co-founder Daniel Engelman:

  1. Honomobo modular container homes are built in the factory in 10-12 weeks. When the home leaves the factory it is 99% complete. The on site time to complete the project is only 1-2 weeks.
  2. Shipping containers are made from corten steel which is chemically formed, with the ability to rust and protect itself from the elements even if all the paint is gone. So, if Honomobo homes are stripped of their paint, it will retain its structural integrity in the long term.
  3. From a financial perspective Honomobo homes are approved in the same way as a home built right on site. Once Honomobo modular homes are installed on their foundation it is a permanent home in the same way as any other home.
  4. Honomobo homes are certified under CSA A277 which is classified as a permanent modular home. From a building and energy code perspective a modular home is built to the same codes and specifications as a site built home.
  5. Honomobo container homes are available to operate carbon neutral right now. All Honomobo homes run 100% on electricity and their power usage can be fully offset by solar PV panels to make them energy neutral or even energy positive.

Do-It-Yourself With Bryan Baeumler

Feb 14, 2020

Canada’s #1 do-it-yourself expert, Bryan Baeumler is coming to Utah for the Salt Lake Tribune Home & Garden Show. You may know him from his hit TV shows Island of Bryan, House of Bryan, Disaster DIY, and Leave it to Bryan. However, this guy is the real deal; learning tricks of the trade from his father since he was a child.

With his vast knowledge and impressive on-the-job experience, Bryan has developed an extensive know-how in balancing the structural aesthetic with intelligent utility. He enjoys teaching viewers the necessary skills to tackle their own projects.

Bryan Baeumler

Why do you think the idea of a do-it-yourself project is so appealing to people?

Bryan: I think there are a few reasons and they vary from person to person. There are people who generally have an interest in it and enjoy doing work around the house, people who want to save money, and people who want to tackle a project and have that sense of accomplishment from taking care of their own home.

Do you think everyone has the ability to try a do-it-yourself project?

Bryan: I think everyone can, but I don’t think everyone wants to. If you really wanted to learn to do it you could invest the time, research and practice. The best way to learn is to get a bit of theory, read the instructions, get your hands dirty and make some mistakes. Go through and learn how not to do it.

What is your advice for a first time do-it-yourselfer?

Bryan: Start small and affordable. It’s kind of like going to a casino; assume you’re going to have to pay someone to fix the problem for you. If you’re willing to write off the materials you purchased, that is a good place to start.

What is a good project to start with?

Bryan: Painting is a classic first project to get your feet wet. If you have patience, and take your time, pretty much anyone can handle painting a wall. You’ll also learn a good professional painter is worth their weight in gold.

Where do folks normally get in over their heads?

Bryan: One of the biggest mistakes people make is that they are optimistic about how much things will cost, how long they will take, and how much skill they will require. We under budget, we don’t allow ourselves enough time, we assume we are better at things we than we are. If it’s unfinished or finished poorly your value will suffer.
