Exhibitor Spotlight: Great Scrape

Oct 28, 2019

The 2019 Des Moines Holiday Boutique is right around the corner and if you’re trying to come up with some unique and clever gift ideas, we’ve got just the ticket for you! Read on to learn more about Great Scrape and be sure to stop by to check them out at the show, which runs November 1-3, 2019 at the Iowa Events Center.

Grate Scrape

Tell us a little bit about Great Scrape.

"Great Scrape has been around for 10 years. This past July was our 10-year anniversary. Great Scrape was started in a garage. The company is owned by three brothers and their close friend. The first year they started creating the product, they applied to be a vendor at the Minnesota State Fair, and got in. They have been growing and expanding ever since."

Describe your product.

"The Great Scrape is an all-natural BBQ cleaning tool and wood grill scraper. It is an alternative to the old metal wire brush. It has custom grooves to uniquely fit your barbecue grill without having to worry about metal bristles or harming your grill grates. It is made of solid premium hard wood and is designed for years of grilling pleasure.  It makes for the perfect grilling accessory or BBQ gift. How it works:

1. Get The Grill Hot - To start the grooving process, ensure your grill is hot (high heat allows the grooves to form quickly).
2. Work Back and Forth - Using slow firm pressure, pass the Great Scrape front to back on the hot grates.
3. Repeat - Align the previously formed grooves to the grates ensuring that only ONE good set of grooves are formed.  Once grooves have formed high heat is no longer necessary."

Besides holiday gifts, what are some of the occasions where Great Scrape makes a good gift idea?

"Great Scrapes are perfect for groomsmen gifts, Father’s Day, housewarming presents and for anyone who loves to BBQ."

What was your takeaway from last year’s Des Moines Holiday Boutique?

"Holiday Boutique is a great place to find unique gifts for each person on your list. Walking around the show, you will find things you may not have been searching for online."

What is your best holiday shopping advice?

"Don’t be afraid to buy the same gift twice."

What do you most look forward to during the holidays?

"Spending time with family and friends."

If you’ve got a BBQ-lover that you know, make sure to head over to the Des Moines Holiday Boutique and visit with Great Scrape! You can learn more about them on their website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Don’t forget you can save $2 if you purchase your tickets online before you head over to the Iowa Events Center!

Author Spotlight: Nick Valenzuela

Oct 25, 2019

This Christmas give the gift of reading - or stock up for yourself. The Christmas Gift + Hobby Show is excited to welcome 20 authors to the Indiana State Fairgrounds, including Nick Valenzuela. Can't wait to see Nick's at the show? Enjoy our brief interview with the "Lack Of Appeal" author below.

Lack of Appeal

Please tell us about your book.

"Lack of Appeal, the barely-fictionalized autobiographical account of two as-they-happen days in the life of a municipal government civil rights complaint investigator, is now available in paperback on Amazon, eBook via Kindle! The novel moves moment-by-moment through one long Monday of housing discrimination Complainant and Respondent interviews, public presentation, complaint intake duty, and epic community meetings; then, in climax, one vigorous Friday attempt to take on perceived mayoral administration apathy towards systemic dysfunction of civil rights law enforcement needed for the public. Chapters detail contemporary, unique, and accessible takes on forms of sexual harassment, race, religion, national origin, families with minor children, and disability, modeled after real-life discrimination case examples. The public administration sector, the non-profit sector, and the central individual are all challenged with the nature of what many readily-accepted views of "civil rights" are, aren't, and may-be. And, the main character's potential personal bias with his own profession while he tries to be civil. Self-absorbed, personal memoir; objective (and objectified) expose on some civil rights, and "civil rights;" a descent into madness; and, with some lighter, humorous, and human touches along the way, this is a defining civil rights novel for the 21st Century."

What are your best tips for the holiday season?

"Check the weather, hourly, for travel out of town!"

What are your featured items this season?

"Lack of Appeal, my debut novel, is available in paperback for only $10 . . . and personalized signature in the book upon request. (That's 33% off the bookstore price, nothing extra for a signed copy!)"

What's your best holiday shopping advice?

"Don't overthink things: give the gift your instincts tell you to get and the recipient should be happy with the thought, even if not the product. Buy a few little things instead of looking to score the big purchase."

What's your favorite part about being in the Christmas Gift + Hobby Show?

"Talking with other Indiana authors about their works, and their personal stories. And, of course, meeting the general public and hearing all the different reasons why someone wants to read books or write their own stories."

What's your favorite Christmas movie?

"Lethal Weapon."

Is there anything else folks should know about you?

"I love to talk with the public about things they've personally experienced with the delicate subject matters covered in this novel, or how I can get prospective published authors in touch with the Indiana Writers Center."

Learn more about "Lack Of Appeal" when see Nick Valnzuela at the Christmas Gift + Hobby Show. Don't miss it! Get your ticket today.

And just like that, the Edmonton Fall Home Show is over. With perfect fall weather in the capital city, Edmontonians jumped to the Edmonton Expo Centre to get their much needed advice on home improvement from some of the industry’s best. There surely was something for everyone with over 200 exhibitors, a slew of amazing features, and workshops for attendees all weekend long.

The HGTV Canada Main Stage was the place to be with celebrity guest Bryan Baeumler flying in from the Bahamas to give showgoers an inside look on his new resort, behind the scenes stories and expert advice on the real value hiding in your home. Edmontonians love Bryan and some lucky attendees got to have their questions answered live on stage by the beloved contractor himself.

Plus, the newly designed Cooking Stage presented by Canadian Appliance Source and designed by Jamie Banfield was cooking up the best bites with some of YEG’s best local foodies. From bloggers, to head chefs, attendees were treated to culinary delights and were ready to take their new learnings home and dig in!

The features at EFHS19 were aimed to inspire and add extra local love. The little flower truck co. parked itself to give attendees the freshest of the season’s floral's and Dinner x Design by Turquoise Chair inspired show goers to take their table settings to the next level. With three amazing table-scapes that included a bohemian style vignette, attendees were wow’d and eager to try their take on extravagant eating areas for their next event or holiday.

For extra local flair, The Makers Keep pop-up hosted home-inspired workshops all weekend long from some of Edmonton’s best makers as well as a market filled full with YEG made product to purchase. Not to mention, The Creative Hive booth was buzzing all three days by hosting free workshops by some of the entrepreneurs who share space in one of the biggest co-working spaces in the city.

We can’t wait to share more at the Edmonton Renovation Show January 24-26th, 2020. We’ll be back at the Edmonton Expo Centre with even more features on the latest trends and bringing in the experts you need to tackle your renovation projects. Can’t wait to see you there!

Exploring SMÃ…(ll): Small Space Living Tips & Tricks From Alison Mazurek

Oct 23, 2019

Living in small quarters is a scenario Vancouverites are all too familiar with. The term micro-loft is a new phrase popping up everywhere from condos to university housing. That’s why this year’s exciting new feature at the Vancouver Fall Home Show is entitled, SMÅ(ll). Små is a Swedish term for small and this year’s feature will showcase small quarter living furnished by IKEA. This 600ft feature will be designed by small space living expert, Alison Mazurek, who lives with two children in her very own 600ft home. Check out some tips and tricks from designer Alison Mazurek below!

Multipurpose Furniture

When living a functional life in a small space it is all about the layout. Purchasing pieces that can work for multiple purposes makes your living space more functional. These days you can purchase stylish murphy beds that when closed function as a desk, leaving you with a bedroom and an office all in the same space. Everything from coffee tables to ottomans have hidden storage so you can hide the mess and keep your place looking stylish!

Multipurpose Furniture

Illusion of the Eye

Fake it till you make it! Create the impression you have more space in your home by strategic placement of mirrors and drapery. Placing a horizontal mirror above a couch gives the illusion that the space continues, thus resulting in the illusion of a bigger space. Placing window-covers directly from the roof to the floor draws the attention of the eye up which elongates a room.

Illusion Of The Eye

There are many DIY options and designs online for creating your own wall garden. Get plants and an art piece all in one! Hanging plants are another fantastic option to bring in a natural decor element and save space.

Vertical Greenery

Head to the Vancouver Fall Home Show to get a first-hand look at how Alison Mazurek creates a living space that is functional, stylish and accessible, all with the help of incredible pieces from IKEA.
