Get To Know Mike Rowe

Mar 06, 2020
If a face doesn’t come to your mind when you hear the name Mike Rowe, let us remind you that he’s the creator and host of the show Dirty Jobs. We’re excited to announce that Mike Rowe is now one of the proud partners of Marketplace Events, producers of Central Kentucky Home & Garden Show! Mike Rowe is also an accomplished writer with his book called, “The Way I Heard It” based off his podcasts and a vivacious host and executive producer of multiple series, Deadliest Catch and Returning the Favor. Mike began his stardom singing in the Baltimore Opera and this opened a ton of doors for him. He then landed a position on the QVC Cable Shopping Channel, selling anything under the sun through the early hours of the morning. But, his most proud moment is his show Dirty Jobs, which began as a tribute to his grandfather and easily transformed cable television.
During a Q + A, Mike was asked some questions about being a homeowner. Here's some advice he has for homeowners:

“I wish people understood how much they could save by making biweekly payments instead of monthly. It’s simple, and for most people doable. An easy way to save a small fortune.”

Who doesn’t want to save a small fortune? This is some great advice for new homeowners that don’t know much about how to save some money on your mortgage. Mike says it’s possible and that everyone can do it, even you! He also has a great standpoint on what the word “home” means to him. Mike says, “Home is the place we start from. Every other place, no matter how homey, is just an address.” Everyone's goal is to make their house “homey” because after all “home is where the heart is!” The Central Kentucky Home & Garden Show is here to give you some inspiration on all things ‘homey’.

Something you probably don’t know about Mike is that he is the creator of a non-profit foundation called the mikeroweWORKS Foundation. His foundation debunks popular myths and misperceptions about the skilled trades and helps close the skill gap. These myths and misperceptions directly impact the home improvement industry because every homeowner is essentially part of the home improvement industry, whether you dabble in small home improvement projects around your home or make a living from flipping houses. Mike says, the foundation is “committed to supporting the local builders, remodelers, installers, repairmen, and all skilled tradespeople who do the jobs that most people are unable or untrained to do.” The mikeroweWORKS foundation awards financial assistance to people getting trained for skilled jobs that are in high demand through its Work Ethic Scholarship Program. Since the start of the foundation, more than $5 million has been granted or helped facilitate the granting of technical and vocational education. Learn more about the foundation by following this link: https://www.mikeroweworks.org/about/.

We are so thankful that Mike Rowe is a partner of Marketplace Events, producers of the Central Kentucky Home & Garden Show, and we could not be more proud of all the accomplishments he has made thus far. Mike says, “There’s not many places left like these local home and garden shows where homeowners can meet with their local experts, get trusted advice, talk price, look them in the eyes, shake their hand and decide for themselves, yes, I’m good with letting this company in my home.” We could not agree more, Mike! Mike will be making appearances at select shows. Cross your fingers that he’ll be at a show near you!

Former White House Florist Displays the Art of Floral Diplomacy

Mar 05, 2020

Laura Dowling is known around the world as one of the top florists and flower experts in the industry. Having appeared numerous times on HGTV, Laura has built a reputation for beautiful, intricate floral designs. Laura also received the very prestigious honor of being the official florist for the White House during the Obama administration, one of only four in history.

An arrangement of abundant peach roses at the Indiana Flower + Patio Show

As Chief Floral Designer for the White House from 2009 until 2015, Dowling managed floral design for thousands of official and private events at the White House. Including, state dinners, parties, receptions and large-scale installations, such as the Fourth of July, Halloween, and the iconic White House Christmas.

Her lush and lively floral creations also graced the White House state rooms, East and West Wing offices, Camp David and the Presidential private residence. Laura’s unique approach focuses on the premise that flowers can be more than just decorative objects, conveying important diplomatic messages, cultural meaning, and symbolic metaphor. Floral diplomacy — the art of honoring visiting dignitaries through floral symbolism that articulates compelling artistic and strategic themes — became a signature initiative during Laura’s time at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Her first book, “Floral Diplomacy at the White House” (March 2017), describes her approach for creating inspiring White House flower and décor, while “A White House Christmas: Including Floral Design Tutorials” (October 2017), gives readers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into decorating the White House for Christmas. Her third book, “Wreaths: With How-To Tutorials” (October 2018), launched a new series of floral and design books. And her newest book, “Bouquets: With How-To Tutorials,” features 75 how-to designs illustrating innovative floral styles and techniques.

Laura is known for her contemporary and romantic style of flower arrangement featuring a free interplay between flowers, floral boughs, and branches, berried twigs and leafy vines, combined with more formally designed bouquets.

Come meet Laura and learn more about her unique approach and one-of-a-kind experiences when she appears at the Flower + Patio Show on Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21! Get your tickets today and beat the lines.

Homeowner Advice from Dave Baker Atlanta’s Home Fix-It Guru

Mar 03, 2020

You hear him every Saturday morning on 95.5 WSB dispensing home fix-it advice and sharing stories about projects gone awry on his Home Fix It Show.  And, while Dave Baker and his radio guests field questions weekly about home repairs, water damage, pest control, painting and more, there is one topic Dave returns to on a regular basis: What Every Homeowner Should Know. So here Dave walks us through his top 5 things EVERY Homeowner Should know:

Tape measure and drill

1)  Know how to shut off your water.  There’s a shut-off valve at your home as well as at the street.  Find them and learn how to shut them off.  This can save you a multitude of problems if you have a water or plumbing issue.

2)  Know where the shut-off switch is for your heating and air conditioning system. It usually looks like a regular light switch. If you have a fire and have time to get to it safely, turn the HVAC off.

3)  Know where the main breaker is for your home’s electricity.  It could be in the circuit box or located outside.  Older boxes may require turning off each breaker individually.  Know where your electric panel is and how it works.

4)  Know that you have working smoke detectors in every sleeping room, plus hallways and gathering rooms.  Dave recommends installing smoke detectors in mechanical rooms, too.  If yours are not hardwired into the home’s electrical system, change the batteries twice a year when you change your clocks to go on and off Daylight Savings Time.

5)  Know how to get out of your home in case of a fire.  Locate the nearest doors and windows from each bedroom and store rope ladders where needed.  Make a family plan and identify a location outside where everyone will meet once you have exited the home.

Do YOU know the answers for your home?  If not, talk to the experts at the Atlanta Home Show so you’ll be prepared in case of a home emergency.

AND… On Saturday, March 21, when the Atlanta Home Show’s doors open at 10 a.m., Dave Baker’s Home Fix-It Show will be underway in Landscapers Lane. Dave and his guests will tackle a variety of home improvement questions and challenges from DIY projects to bigger concerns like wet basements, poor insulation and much more.  Dishing out equal parts humor and expertise, Dave’s show is the perfect way to kick off Saturday morning at the Atlanta Home Show! FOUR REMODELING MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR THE MARKET

Mar 02, 2020
If you’ve decided to put your home on the market, you know there’s a lot to be done! After looking around your house to prepare for selling, you probably realize some areas may need some help. From décor to renovations, it can be hard to know exactly what to do in order to make your home the most desirable house on the market.

Before investing a lot of time and money, be sure you take the time to talk to the experts at the Nashville Home + Remodeling Expo. It is especially important to understand the return on investment for anything you put into your home before selling. Here are some common mistakes for you to avoid when prepping your home for the market.

[Insert Image]

Bold design.
You may be tempted to update a room with an eye-catching wall color, accent walls or trendy, exciting new flooring, but house hunters are usually not looking for a home that needs lot of work done to make it theirs. Keep tones and designs neutral and classic, avoiding trendy, bold selections that will most oftentimes be hit or miss for each person. For potential home-buyers, the more unique a home is, the more expensive it can be to redo with tasks such as painting and tiling.

Scarce Storage.
Major home renovations usually include tearing down walls and combining spaces. If you plan to make an adjustment like this within your home, be sure to refrain from removing extra storage space that’s already in the house. Oftentimes, closet space and storage in a new home are at the top of many wish lists.

Unnecessary luxuries.
In order to make the most profit, it’s best to avoid top-of-the-line upgrades that most likely won’t make a huge impact in selling your home. Built-in technology, custom islands in the kitchen, luxury appliances and whirlpool tubs can all be passed on when preparing your home for the market. Not only are these types of luxuries expensive for you, they’ll also become outdated for the buyer and not worth the extra investment.

DIY.
After you’ve decided what you’re going to do in order to prepare your home, it’s wise to invest in professional craftsmanship along with quality materials for the best result in many projects. While some homeowners can complete minor projects, if remodeling isn’t your profession, it’s oftentimes best to leave it to the pros! Realtors and home-buyers can spot the difference between quick or nonprofessional attempts that don’t last. Spend the time to find professionals you trust and know what you shouldn’t try to tackle yourself.

Preparing your home and remodeling can be overwhelming for anyone putting a house on the market. If you are considering a big project and you’re not totally sure about how to do so, the experts at the Nashville Home + Remodeling Expo can help you make the most decision for a wide variety of home renovation projects. Browse the booths at the expo to find the right expert for the renovations on your list! See you at the show!

Keep Hardwood Floors Looking Pristine with These Useful Tips

Mar 02, 2020
Your hardwood floors may be a part of your home’s original grandeur, or they could be a newer addition. No matter the age of your hardwoods, upkeep is the key to making sure they stay in the best shape possible. After all, your floors are a piece of your home that gets the most wear and tear with walking, moving furniture, and more.
Giving your home the unique accent of gorgeous hardwood floors is an investment that can last a lifetime – as long as you’re willing to take great care of them. Show sponsors, M P Caroll Hardwood are flooring experts that have been serving Western New Yorkers since 1985. And now, they want to give you a few simple care tips to keep your hardwood floors looking amazing.

Clean and Maintain:
• Sweep or vacuum regularly. (NOTE: vacuum head must be a brush or felt type, do not use a vacuum with a beater brush and be sure that the vacuum wheels are clean)
• Wipe up spills immediately using a soft cloth; a slightly dampened cloth will help if working on stubborn or sticky substances.
• Use “Goof Off” or mineral spirits to remove scuffs, adhesive residue, tar, crayon or dried latex paint.
• Wash your floors every six to eight weeks; use cleaners formulated for hardwood use only and spot clean between washes. (M P Caroll carries a full line of approved cleaning solutions.)
• The use of steam mops is not recommended; steam mops use water vapor under pressure and will push moisture into areas of your hardwood floors that is not protected which may cause damage.
• Never use any type of floor polish.

Protect:
• Adhere felt pads on the bottom of your furniture legs to protect against scratches.
• When moving appliances, do not push or drag.  Use an appliance dolly and sheets of plywood to safely move these items.
• Furniture that have narrowed or metal style casters can cause damage to your floor; replace them with a rubber designed caster.
• Place area rugs/doormats at entry points and in front of kitchen sinks.  All rugs should be made of breathable material as not to trap moisture.

Everyday Care Reminders:
• Do not push or drag anything across your hardwood floors.
• Keep your pets nails trimmed and lay down runners where they are known to regularly run.
• Remove shoes with spiked or damaged heels before walking on any hardwood surface.
• Hardwood expands and contracts with humidity changes; it performs better between a 40-50% relative humidity level and an ambient air temperature between 60-80°.  The use of air conditioning systems, humidifiers and dehumidifiers will assist in maintaining these levels.

If you have any questions about your floors or would like to talk to an expert at M P Caroll about new floor installation, be sure to stop by booth 336 at this year’s Buffalo Home Show at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center March 6-8 and March 13-15.

CRAVING SOME OF HGTV STAR, ATI WILLIAMS’ BEST TIPS? READ ON!

Feb 27, 2020
The first weekend of the Buffalo Home Show is a must-see, because HGTV’s DC Flippers star, Ati Williams, will be joining us right here in Western New York. She’ll be sharing her extensive renovation and design knowledge at the show on March 6 and 7, and we can hardly wait!

Aside from being an HGTV star, Ati is the Principal of Honeycomb Residential. She started getting the itch for home renovation after doing a few minor projects in her first home. Since then, Ati has worked on dozens of renovations from cosmetic fixes, to complete gut rehabs. What she loves most is breathing new life into a home’s old soul through tasteful and custom updates.

We couldn’t wait to get to know Ati a little better, so we sat down and asked her a few questions. And now, we’re even more excited for her to visit the Buffalo Home Show! Here’s what she had to say:

What tool should every homeowner own?
Ati: A tape measurer. Wrong measurements can cost you your entire project.

Wallpaper: love or hate?
Ati: Obsessed. I am especially loving the new trend with peel and stick. Great for walls, furniture, art etc.

Best home purchase for under $100?
Ati: A smart home device like Alexa. You can program lots of other things in the house like the temperature, blinds, lights, security system, and more.

Tell us about your pets.
Ati: I had the most magical, amazing dog Cooper but he died recently. My daughter is currently actively campaigning for a new pup. In the meantime, our pet beta fish will suffice.

What’s your favorite paint color?
Ati: Hale Navy. A dark navy blue that can be both warm and cool. It works in any size room, any esthetic and with any type of trim.

Any simple tips for upgrading a small bathroom?
Ati: Remove all old hardware (even light fixtures) and give them a coat of matte black spray paint. Put an epoxy coat in the tub to brighten it and install durable luxury vinyl tile.

What are you currently reading?
Ati: A lot of “Pete the Cat” with my kindergartener and Julie Lopez’s book, “Rewire the Brain.”

Any furniture thrifting tips?
Ati: My favorite place to thrift is the 100 Mile Yard Sale that happens once a year on Route 29 in Virginia.

Favorite kitchen gadget?
Ati: Our Breville toaster oven. We have a pretty fancy, heavy duty one that bakes, grills and air fries. We use it way more than our stove.

Are you a fan of the Mari Kondo method? What’s your best organization hack?
Ati: I am a failed minimalist. I like my stuff. However, my favorite hack is the clothing folding thing. We have little folding boxes everywhere.

What’s your favorite part about speaking at a home show?
Ati: I love it when people come prepared with their home projects for my advice. It is so fun looking at the pictures and floorplans and helping with some solutions.

Come out to the first weekend of the Buffalo Home Show and meet Ati. You won’t want to miss her presentations on the Main Stage, March 6 and 7 where she’ll be sharing all her home renovation secrets.

A good deck can be the centerpiece of your backyard life, this year at the Indiana Flower + Patio Show we want to bring your yard the best in decks. So, it’s time to see who can build the most dynamite deck in our Deck Wars competition, sponsored by Trex, the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing products.

Top decking contractors from across Central Indiana will duke it out in real-time — designing and building one-of-a-kind decks on the show floor. Each builder gets a 20x20-foot space in the Exposition Hall, and Flower + Patio Show attendees will cast their vote to choose the winner, decided on Friday, March 20!

“What a fun way to highlight the amazing talents of our TrexPros,” said Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing for Trex. “These are some of the best decking contractors in the business. We can’t wait to see them in action!”

The contractors who will be participating in the Deck Wars competition are:
• Advance Deck & Sun-room Indiana – Owner John Hile has served the Indiana region and all surrounding areas for nearly 20 years, focused on decks, sun-rooms, screen rooms, and gazebos.
• Decks Unlimited – A family business for more than 50 years, Decks Unlimited has built hundreds of decks in Lafayette, West Lafayette, Rensselaer, Monticello and the communities surrounding Indianapolis.
• Hittle Construction – In business since 1995, Hittle Construction has completed more than 5,000 outdoor living projects. Located in Westfield, Hittle Construction’s projects range from all sorts of decks to outdoor structures.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the unique ideas and designs the other builders come up with,” said John Hile of Advance Deck & Sun-room Indiana. “I am also excited for the chance to work indoors for once!”

Don’t forget to check out all three deck spaces as they grow in Exposition Hall at the Flower + Patio Show, March 14-22, and vote for your favorite!

Describe your service.

We help people celebrate the love they have for their pets by creating heirloom portraits that are the envy of their family & friends!

What are your best tips for this season?

Because photography is all about capturing memorable moments in time, we recommend that EVERYONE consider having their pet's portrait made so that they will always have those images to help remember the special moments spent with their pet.  Our pets are not with us as long as we would like, so taking the action now while they are still healthy and happy will prevent any regrets after they have gone to play by the Rainbow Bridge.

What are your featured services this season?

Our clients love that we conduct all our business in the comfort and privacy of their homes.  In our experience, pets are much more relaxed in their own environment and keeping them as relaxed as possible is crucial in capturing their personalities.  And we love offering $100 off the cost of their photo session during the trade show to help reduce the investment in their memories.

What are some difficulties in your business?

I wouldn't say we have pet peeves in our business, but having sad conversations with potential clients who have recently had to say goodbye to their pet without having their pet's portrait made is always a difficult conversation to have.  It's heartbreaking to see the pain in their eyes knowing their pet is gone and looking at our display and wishing they had a portrait of their own.

What is the strangest client request you've ever received?

Our clients don't generally make strange requests of us.

What is your favorite part about the home show?

Our favorite part of the Home Show is getting to talk to all the people who love their pets.  We seem to spend a great deal of time looking at photos of their beloved pets on their phones and we love it!!

Anything else you'd like to share?

Imagine If Photography is a very "high touch" photography service, meaning we provide custom services to our clients and doing all the hard work for them (coming to their home for the session and carefully walking them through the process of choosing the perfect images of their pets).  We also deliver fully finished products to their homes, ready to be displayed for all their family and friends to see and for them to enjoy.  We prefer that all wall art is complete and ready to hand on the wall the day it is delivered, so all products are custom made using professional lab services and expert framing specialists to ensure that their finished portraits will fit into the decor of their home beautifully!

You can visit Pam and Shandelle in the Imagine If Photography booths, PP9 & PP10 at the OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show this March 27 - 29. Get your tickets today and we'll see you at the State Fair Park.

What are your home or garden pet peeves?

I really don’t like to see planting beds overcrowded or plants that have been placed in the wrong spot,….. that they may need constant trimming. My favorite landscape design is one that allows the plants to grow to their natural size and beauty….so choose wisely.

What is the strangest client request you've ever received?

To add a steel shipping container at the base of a hill so they didn’t have to use as much back-fill to extend their yard.

Seeing our past customers from years ago and hearing their stories of how they have used and enjoyed our products.

Feb 25, 2020

With the Southern Spring Home & Garden Show coming up fast, we sat down with some of our exhibitors to see what unique goods and services they have to offer.

Penelope S. Morgan of Gotta Be Penelopes, LLC shared with us the story of her brand new Pepper Jelly business. Even though, Gotta Be Penelopes is only 7 months old they already have a bunch of big fans and 19 stores carrying their products. Gotta Be Penelopes, LLC Logo Image

Describe your products

All-natural Hot Pepper Jellies in 5 and 10 oz sized jars ranging from extra mild to extra hot in Apricot and Pineapple Habanero flavors.  Hilarious laser engraved cutting boards and leather drink coasters.  We also customize and do online shipping upon request.

What are your best home or garden tips for this season?

A great way to organically add potassium and magnesium to your tomato plants is to drop a whole banana and a few teaspoons of Epsom salt about 12-15" deep in the planting hole when planting.  I do this every season and get a fabulous bounty of tasty tomatoes.

What are your featured items this season?

We have the most unique (flavor first) tasting hot pepper jellies.  We attend festivals, markets, pop-ups, etc. and everyone who tastes them always buys.  The usual comment is "wow, I've never tasted any pepper jelly this good before"!  We will hold a raffle each day at the event to select a winner to receive 2 of our largest jars of jellies to be shipped to any location they choose (within the US).  You choose the flavors and heat levels.  We also will be selling our hilarious laser engraved cutting boards and leather coasters.

What are your home or garden pet peeves?

The overuse of chemicals in your yard and the murdering of crape myrtles being cut back too far.

What is the strangest client request you've ever received?

Can I work for you for pepper jelly? :)

What is your favorite part about the home show?

Conversing with such a diverse crowd of people.  I love to watch people's reactions when they taste the jelly.  Many are afraid of the word habanero, but once they taste my mild, they're amazed at how it doesn't burn and tastes amazing.  Customers also laugh and relate to my cutting boards and coasters.  Many other vendors usually end up buying from me too.  Several people have told me to go on Shark Tank. :)

Sponsor Spotlight: RenovationFind

Feb 25, 2020

We’re excited to have RenovationFind as a sponsor of the 2020 Calgary Home + Garden Show. Before you visit this innovative company at BMO Centre February 27 - March 1, please enjoy our brief interview with the RenovationFind team below.

RenovationFind Team standing at the show

Q: How does your service work?

RenovationFind.com is a free online directory of trades, contractors and home renovation companies. Every business on the website goes through a pre-screening process conducted by a third-party organization. The seven areas we screen includes financial and legal background checks, monitoring of customer reviews, ensuring that they have a valid business license and insurance as well as WCB coverage. These companies are continuously monitored to make sure that they’re keeping up to standard. Companies that are a part of the Better Business Bureau get a higher ranking in the site’s directory. RenovationFind ensures that homeowners are hiring reputable, trustworthy and certified companies for their home improvement projects. Promoting these good, deserving companies is also one of our top priorities.

RenovationFind Certified Logo

Q: What can we look forward to from you at the Calgary Home and Garden Show?

People can come see us at our booth at the show. They can post their projects at our booth, and expect to hear from three RenovationFind Certified companies with quotes for that project. For instance, if they are doing a major kitchen renovation and are looking for help, we can send that project to general contractors in Calgary, and they’ll be contacted by those companies to start the estimate process.

As well, there will be a giveaway for people who sign up for a RenovationFind membership. They will be entered in a contest to win $1000 and an iPad at the booth. Plus, with a membership they’ll receive special pricing and offers from our partnering companies.

Q: What advice do you have for homeowners?

It’s extremely important to research the company before you hire them. A company should be able to provide references, proof of insurance and a valid business license. When given a quote, everything should be provided in writing and in detail. Asking for documentation is within your rights. If a company is unwilling, that may be a sign that you should look elsewhere.

With references, ask for the three latest projects that they have worked on. This way, they won’t be able to pick and choose the very best projects they’ve ever done. Getting the three latest will give you a better picture of what you could be working with.

Q: What inspires your services?

I’ve encountered many homeowners who have been ripped off, or had a very negative experience with their contractor during a home renovation. They may encounter contractors or companies that treat them poorly, overcharge them, or even leave them with poor work or work unfinished. This site makes sure that that doesn’t happen. Homeowners can trust they’re hiring an honest contractor who will give them quality work.

Q: What is your favourite part of the Calgary Home and Garden Show?

It’s a great opportunity to meet homeowners and let them know how we can help with their home renovations. Not only that, but it also gives us a chance to help the companies on our directory out by sending clients their way. It’s win win for everyone.

RenovationFind Booth at the Show

Q: What design or decor trends did you love in 2019 or anticipate for 2020?

Based on surveys we conduct at the shows, it seems that more people would rather renovate their current home instead of buying a new one. Maybe it’s because they’ve grown to love the area they’re from, or have put down roots in their home that they don’t want to leave, but renovating their home for the long-term stay seems to be something many homeowners are into.

Q: Are there any success stories you'd like to share?

Many homeowners have had positive experiences with RenovationFind. Customers have provided positive feedback, sharing that their experiences renovating with our certified companies have taken a lot of stress out of the process. The companies are marketed to their geographical target demographics, giving them quality leads through our website and boosting business. Many companies and customers have found and continue to have success with the connections made through RenovationFind.

Q: What can folks expect when they work with you?

Because of our certification process, homeowners can rest easy knowing they’re hiring the best of the best in terms of trades or renovation companies. If you’re a company looking for helping getting leads, you’ll find that our marketing efforts have proven successful for the companies on our directory. Homeowners can browse through many categories of home renovation services, including general contractors, concrete contractors, Calgary cabinet companies, painters, electricians, exterior renovations in Calgary, siding contractors, Calgary insulation companies, and more!

For the companies listed in our directory, we work hard to promote them to their target demographic. We promote their profile and content through email campaigns, blog posts, social media marketing and search engine optimization strategies. We work hard to make sure that companies are getting the traffic they need to grow their business.

The Calgary Home and Garden Show is your source for trusted home experts, like RenovationFind. Join us at the BMO Centre February 27 – March 1 to get great ideas for your space and see HGTV Celebrity Contractor Bryan Baeumler (appearing Friday and Saturday). We can't wait to see you at the show!

Be sure to see presentations throughout the Show on the Home + Garden Stage by local experts and HGTV Canada’s Bryan Baeumler presented by RBC, to get a leg up on home improvement projects. Janet Melrose known as Calgary’s Cottage Gardener will also be at the Show answering ALL your garden and yard questions. We asked Janet if she could give us tips for beginners looking to start a garden or better their own and she supplied us with a few words of wisdom and some amazing tips! Check out what she has to say below.

“It is a funny thing, but people who are wanting to get involved in gardening often ask me if it is too late to start. It is almost as if we feel we need to have been born with a gardening gene to be good gardeners. I always reply that it is never too late to begin and now is the best time; all you need is the desire. It’s sort of like the adage: ’When the best time is to plant a tree?’. The answer is of course ’20 years ago, but right now is the next best time’!

For those just feeling the urge to grow something, and we all do have that urge to connect with nature and nurture plants in us, here are a few things I have learned over my years gardening to make your first experiences satisfying and enjoyable.” - Janet Melrose

1. Take the time to attend a workshop or two before plunging in.

Calgary and the surrounding area are not the easiest of climates to garden in. We need to understand what we are dealing with, be it the weather as it affects what we can plant so it thrives or how to cultivate our generally clay based soils, just for starters. Gardening is not difficult, but it does have a host of variables, many of which may be beyond our control.

2. Start slowly and small.

Instead of splurging on a ready-made landscape, start with some containers or perhaps a small in-ground bed the first year. Or even a few herbs in pots. And spend the time to learn what it is that you really want to get out of gardening. Is it food for ourselves or perhaps making habitat for our threatened insects? Or a place to relax and be serene that is colourful and beautiful? Or an outdoor living area complete with coquet on the lawn? In my new house a few decades ago now, all I did that first year was to plant 12 red tulips for the spring!

3. Gardening is not just the result of our endeavors.

It is the entire process and experience and joy we get from being part of a garden. It is about the physical activity, the chance to learn more and more about the natural world, the feeling of connectedness with nature or other gardeners, and the positive emotional wellness we feel being in our gardens. Viewed from that perspective it frees us to enjoy that process and not be controlled by the results.

4. Do understand that nature is the boss of all gardeners rather than the other way around.

We do better if we view our efforts as nothing more than being that helping hand to the plants we sow, plant, water and care for over the season. It is even better if we welcome all the other life there is into our gardens, be they insects, birds, mammals or the microbes that call soil their home. Enlist Mother Nature as an ally but understand too she has a very quirky sense of humour!

5. Finally, make sure you have a vast sense of humour.

With all that happens in a garden from the weather that changes every season to the pesky squirrels digging for the nuts they stashed in our containers to the volunteer plants we call weeds popping everywhere, you really do need to find and feel the delight for all that can and will happen in a garden… Because there is always next spring no matter what happens this season!

Go learn more from Janet at the Show but be sure to also check out features throughout the Show. ‘WOW’ your friends and family when they step into your backyard this spring by applying Janet’s tips and getting inspo from the Garden Corner and Backyard Oasis Features.
