Nov 04, 2019

No, this isn’t going to be a boring economic impact or buying trends business story. We’re hear to proclaim that Minneapolis Holiday Boutique is the land of local creativity and brimming with Minnesota-made gifts.

Nearly a quarter of this year’s exhibitors will be featured in the Midwest Artisan Area located on the northwest end of the field. Here you’ll find beautiful, custom-made gifts created by over 50 regional artisans. From beauty items to baubles and food to fashion, you’ll find hundreds of items to fill your shopping bags. In addition, Holiday Boutique organizers have expanded the local theme with a new artisan preview area located on the concourse by BAR and Caribou Coffee.

Minneapolis Holiday Boutique

You can be an artisan, too. Fleur de Louis and Northern Gardener are hosting “Make It, Take It” workshops on the concourse from 1pm - 5pm on Saturday, November 9. For just $20, you’ll get the supplies and artistic guidance to create your own piece of holiday door décor to take home or yourself or give as a gift.

Speaking of Minnesota-made, we love our local entertainers and personalities! Be sure to check out the following festive activities and photo opportunities:

• Twin Cities-based designer Christopher Straub has created the new “Holiday Runway Challenge” fashion display using materials from Holiday Boutique vendors. Find it on the concourse level near the entrance. In addition, Christopher will showcase “Christopher’s Favorite Finds” featuring ten of this year’s must-have gifts.

• Miss Minnesota 2019 Kathryn Kueppers will be multi-tasking as both performer and vendor at this year’s Holiday Boutique. Kathryn be singing on the concourse on Friday and Saturday at 4pm. She’ll also be selling her own line of artisan earrings with proceeds benefitting Children’s Miracle Network. Visit Kathryn at her booth (#713BA) – she’ll sign autographs and take selfies – with her crown!

• Fred Astair Dance Studio instructors will show and share their skills with guests on Friday (group class at 6pm and performance at 7pm) and Saturday (group classes at 11am and 3pm).

• Take fun selfies with “smokin’ hot” charity calendar models at the Twin Cities Fire Fighters Selfie Station with Mirror Me Perfect from 5pm - 8pm on Friday and Saturday, Sunday from noon - 2pm.

Simple Ways To Add Sparkle To Your Home

Nov 04, 2019

The things that make Christmas special like twinkling lights, beautifully wrapped gifts and steaming mugs of hot chocolate will soon be here! We know you’re eager to start decorating your home to make it cozy for the holidays, but where to begin? We talked to Ballard Designs at Charlotte’s SouthPark Mall about fun and easy ways to bring the joy of the season indoors. Let’s dive in and learn some new ways to deck the halls!

Christmas

• Draping a festive holiday print over your fireplace mantel or side table is a great way to spread some cheer. Ballard Designs comes out with a new Saint Nicholas print every season!

• Everyone in the South loves a good monogram! It adds such a personal touch to each family member’s stocking. Every stocking you buy from Ballard Designs comes with the free option to have it monogramed. This is a great way to create a memorable Christmas morning unwrapping gifts with the family in front of a toasty fire.

• Dough bowls are excellent coffee table décor options you might leave in your house all throughout the year. As the days grow colder though, you can turn them into beautiful table centerpieces when you have guests over. Simply change out what you normally display in them for sprigs of holly, ornaments, garland and even candy canes for festive flair.

• We bet this next tip is one you haven’t thought of – it’s a highly effective eye catcher that’s sure to please your guests. Hang a small garland wreath or mini boxwood from the backs of your dining chairs with ribbon. Either will give your space a merry atmosphere and show you considered every detail.

• We leave you with an idea that truly shines! You can absolutely get creative with your chandeliers, even if they’re more ornate. All you have to do is trade out their neutral shades for the robust richness of red plaid fabric.

Interested in learning more tips about decorating for the holidays? Check out our Designer Rooms created by the SouthPark Mall Studio Design Consultants from Ballard Designs while you’re at the Southern Christmas Show! You also won’t want to miss our décor competition sponsored by Renewal by Andersen where exhibitors decorate wreaths, mantels and doors. It’s sure to give you beautiful ideas!

Organizational Goals to Accomplish Before Your 2020 Resolutions

Nov 02, 2019
It’s that time of year! As the seasons change and a new year is on the horizon, we all have a list of goals and resolutions, but there is some organizing you should probably do first. Whether your dream is to lose weight, redo your master bathroom or create a beautiful garden, here are some ways to optimize your chances of success:

For healthier eating, reorganize your kitchen
Many people swear off junk food, alcohol and sugary treats in January, but your kitchen might be making it more difficult. If you routinely have unhealthy foods in plain sight, you’re more likely to eat them. By rearranging your kitchen to showcase healthy options, you’ll be making it a little easier to choose carrots and hummus over potato chips.

aOHRS17-1009

Have a designated (and clean) “catch all” room to put stuff
The holidays result in a lot of new items for many people and that can mean stuff accumulating and ultimately leading to messy, crowded living areas. Choose a place in your home, whether it’s the basement or an unused bedroom, and place items you don’t utilize in there.

Tidy garages and sheds lead to beautiful yards
You’ve been dreaming about a beautiful rose garden and immaculate green lawn for months. But before that can become a reality, make sure your gardening and landscaping tools are clean, easy to find and ideally located for frequent use.

Planning Your Renovation

Nov 02, 2019

Deciding to renovate your home can be both scary and exciting. Visions of beautiful kitchen cabinets and marble bathroom floors conflict with those of sawdust coating every square inch. While the process can be long and arduous, here is a guide for how to start.

Construction-2

1. Hit the Web
Start brainstorming ideas for what you want. By getting a feel for the styles, materials and finishing touches you like, you’ll save time during the design process.

2. Plan It Out
Priorities and budget are paramount during a renovation. Know exactly how much you have to spend and then allocate it towards what you want the most.

3. Do Your Homework
Check out a contractor through NARI, Better Business Bureau, state attorney general’s office, etc. There are a host of peer review websites now, so you should never hire a contractor without thoroughly checking prior feedback.

4. Go With Your Gut
When interviewing contractors, your “gut” feeling tells you if you are comfortable with this person/company “living” in your home for weeks or months!

5. Keep Your Perspective
Remodeling can be disruptive to your normal household environment.  Sometime deadlines are extended due to what they find behind the walls.  Cabinet orders that take 4-8 weeks can now take 8-12.  Take a deep breath and be patient!

Need more help? Ask an Expert by NARI is the perfect place to speak with local professionals who can give you all the insider information you need to make informed choices.

For more inspiration for your next home improvement project, come hear what the pros have to say at the Johnson County Home + Remodeling Show at the Overland Park Convention Center from Nov. 1-3, 2019. There will be more than 200 home improvement experts on hand all weekend to answer your biggest questions. Get your tickets NOW!

Your Home + Remodeling Show Checklist

Nov 02, 2019

The Johnson County Home + Remodeling Show is the perfect place to meet industry experts, get design inspiration and price out your home projects. However, with hundreds of vendors, the show can be overwhelming. It’s easy to forget why you’re there or what you need if you don’t have a show checklist!

First, write down a list of the industries you’re interested in learning more about. These could include the following: home renovation, solar power, foundation repairs, tree trimming and landscaping. Then make note of specific projects you want to pursue in those categories. This will give you a great starting place for doing research on the show exhibitors.

exhibitor

Visit our website where you can see a comprehensive list of the companies attending. Make note of the booth numbers and business names of the relevant exhibitors. You can also view the floor plan on the website and mark where you want to go.

Finally, do some brief research about the various industries. What questions do you really want to ask? By having a set list of queries, you can stay focused and not get distracted by other avenues of conversation.

There’s a wealth of information and opportunity at the home show. All you need to do is be organized, purposeful and excited to learn about how you can make your home better than ever!

Energy Efficiency Tips for Fall & Winter

Nov 02, 2019

It might have been one of the warmest years on record, but temperatures are quickly plummeting in Kansas City. As you’re hauling your winter parkas and boots out of the closet, here are some tips to increase your savings and energy efficiency.

Evaluate your home for “heat leaks”
Older homes are susceptible to leaking heat for a number of reasons. Outdated windows or doors may lack some of the newer technologies that improve insulation (saving you money whether it’s hot or cold outside). Also, depending on whether your walls are plaster or drywall may affect the amount of energy transfer. Using an infrared camera can show where the cold spots are, getting you one step closer to an energy efficient home!

Have your furnace cleaned
Many homeowners only look at their furnace when the worst happens…it stops working. But by checking your filter monthly, you can increase energy efficiency throughout the entire year. If you haven’t had your furnace looked at in awhile, an inspection can result in significant savings down the road by identifying potential issues in advance.

Celebrate the season with LEDs
Holiday lighting is a great way to show your festive spirit. In terms of energy efficiency, LEDs are far superior to other bulbs. By switching incandescent Christmas lights to LEDs, you’ll cut down energy costs that otherwise might dampen your merriness when the energy bill arrives in the mail.

Learn more about solar
While there is an upfront investment in utilizing solar-powered generators, these eco-friendly, and energy-efficient products represent the possibility of significantly reduced energy costs over the next several decades. And depending where you live, there may be federal or state incentives for adopting this up-and-coming technology!

Many of our exhibitors at the Johnson County Home + Remodeling Show are experts in the fields of home renovation, heat & cooling, lighting and solar power. Make sure to stop on by and see what they can offer to improve your home’s energy efficiency this season, and for years to come!

Christopher Straub's Déjà Vu

Nov 02, 2019

Christopher Straub is feeling like it is 2009 all over again! Our charming local designer was a contestant on season six of the hit TV show Project Runway, which aired that year. On the show, he was challenged to make wearable garments from materials given to him.

Christopher Straub

At this year’s Minneapolis Holiday Boutique, Christopher has been given a similar challenge - this time using items from four select vendors. From tea towels and wooden spoons to cashmere and pillow cases, Christopher has assembled incredible ensembles.

Christopher Straub’s “Holiday Runway Challenge” garments will be displayed on mannequins near the event entry on the concourse level – perfect for your first Instagram post of the day! Don’t forget to vote for your favorite look.

Christopher Straub

In addition to the festive fashion display, once again, the design master has chosen “Christopher’s Favorite Finds" to help with your holiday shopping. Christopher perused the hundreds of vendors and chose ten of this year’s must-have gifts. The list includes: Cambria Life + Style; FSR Minnesota Soap & Candle, Generation Bee; Heavenly Treats LLC; Homespun Gifts & Decor; Hunter's Reserve; Realia by Jen; Sebesta Apothecary; Softies; and Christopher’s own line of gifts for kids.

“I wanted to cover a wide variety of gift-giving categories including jewelry, items for the home, kid's gifts, stuff for the guys in your life, wearables and tasty treats,” Christopher explained. “This year's vendors have the most impressive offerings that I've seen in my four years at Minneapolis Holiday Boutique. The ‘Christopher's Favorite Finds’ list is a great place to start when making your holiday shopping list.”

Make sure to stop by Christopher’s Booth (#229) to say hello and check out his line of children’s books and plush toys. And, thank you to Christopher for helping make the Minneapolis Holiday Boutique so stylish and fun!
