Q: How does your service work?

RenovationFind is a free online directory of home improvement companies, trades and contractors. Each company on the website goes through extensive background checks and a certification process. A third-party organization does background checks on legal and financial, monitors customer feedback, checks for business licensing, insurance and WCB coverage. Better Business Bureau companies receive a higher ranking. All companies are constantly monitored based on these criteria, to make sure they’re keeping up to standard.

RenovationFind makes sure that homeowners are protected by putting the best, most trustworthy companies forward for their home renovations. We are also focused on promoting companies that do good work so we can improve the reputation of the renovation industry. It’s a win-win situation for both the consumer and the business owner.

Q: What can we look forward to from you at the Winnipeg Home and Garden Show?

We invite visitors to the show to learn more about us at our booth. We will have stations where they can post a project, and we can connect them with three different contractors or trades for that project. After the connect is made, they’ll receive three accurate quotes from trustworthy companies.

Q: What advice do you have for homeowners?

Research is critical before making any hiring decision for your home renovation. Check the credentials of the contractor, including their insurance and business license. You should also get a few references from previous clients they’ve done work for.

When asking for references, ask for the last three jobs the company worked on instead of any reference they choose. Companies may give you their best jobs and purposefully keep the poor ones to themselves, obviously. You will get a more accurate depiction of the company by getting the three previous jobs since they won’t be able to pick and choose.

Q: What inspires your services?

Working in the home renovation industry for many years, I encountered many people on a regular basis that were taken advantage of by home renovation contractors. They were left with bad work, work unfinished and often a financial burden as a result. RenovationFind helps remove those problems from the renovation process. Homeowners will find companies they can trust will do good work, and that can be trusted.

Q: What is your favourite part of the Winnipeg Home and Garden Show?

We love meeting new people and letting them know what RenovationFind does. We like to help owners find a good company for their project, and in turn, we get to promote the good companies on our directory at the same time. Connecting a homeowners with a home renovation company helps both out, and makes for a successful exchange. This is why we do what we do.

Q: What design or decor trends did you love in 2019 or anticipate for 2020?

One of the trends that we have noticed this year is that people would rather renovate their current home instead of buying and moving to a new one. Maybe they’ve found their forever home, or love their neighbourhood, we see that they want to renovate to stay. Whether they need a home addition, a kitchen renovation, or something as small as changing the lighting, it’s been great to see that renovating is a popular choice, over moving entirely.

Q: Are there any success stories you'd like to share?

Homeowners have had success with our website. Customer feedback has shown that people are happy with the contractors they hire from RenovationFind.com. Often, they’ll use the site once and then come back again and again for other projects in the future.

BEAUTIFY YOUR GARDEN & OUTDOOR SPACE

Spring has sprung! As the spring cleaning begins in your house, don’t forget to freshen up your garden to help get it back in shape for the warmer months. Here are a few tips to get started, then head to the Austin Spring Home & Garden Show (March 27-29 at the Palmer Events Center) for more advice.

 

Step 1 - Clean Garden Area

Clearing your garden of old leaves, dead plants, and other flora that hasn’t yet composted will make way for your existing plants to flourish and allow room for new plants. This is also a great time to sharpen your gardening tools to prepare them for the upcoming maintenance.

 

Step 2 - Refresh Soil

Before you get to planting, revitalize the soil, which is likely dry and in need of nutrients in preparation for your new seedlings. Adding water and organic material like compost and mulch will help your plants flourish and prevent weeds.

 

Step 3 - Plant

Once you’ve cleaned and prepped your garden beds, it’s finally time to add in your favorite plants! Plant native shrubs, perennials, annuals, vegetables, herbs, and anything else you would like. Planting flora native to your area will not only help attract native fauna (like the ever-important pollinators) but help enhance the overall ecosystem.

 

Step 4 - Maintain

Once you complete steps 1-3 and your spring garden is in a good place, it’s time to look ahead and decide what additional enhancements you can add to complete your outdoor space. Consider adding in water features, garden ornaments, and patio furniture so you can truly enjoy your colorful garden.

Making Fido Happy at Home

At the Fairgrounds Southern Ideal Home Show this year, guests can check out the Sit Mean Sit Pet Stage, which is showcasing live dog obedience demos all show long. There once was a time when the only “upgrade” you could make in your home for a dog was a simple doggy door. But as times have changed, so has our creativity, technology, and resources. If you’re thinking of personalizing your home to be more dog-friendly, here are a few ideas you might want to consider.

Concealed Crates.

When adopting your furry friend, you probably didn’t think about how “cute” their metal wired crate was going to be sitting in the corner of a room. To help better conceal your pooch’s crate, consider placing it inside barely used coat closet or if you have one – under your staircase. Many pet parents have actually been jumping on the trend of using the (usually) wasted space under a staircase and transforming it into Fido’s own special area.

Built-In Doggy Beds.

Creating an elaborate built-in doggy bed for your pup is another excellent idea, that won’t necessarily need to be completely concealed away. Some owners build them under their mantel where a fireplace might have been. Other creations have been cut out of a wall, built under the owner’s bed, or added on to a countertop. Whatever you decide, this nook will allow your pup to feel safely confined in a place they know they can retreat to if things ever become too overwhelming.

Hidden Toy Chest.

As pet parents, we can sometimes go overboard with the number of toys we shower our pets with. But just like having a toddler with too many toys, they seem to end up everywhere – in every corner of your home. Since you can’t really ask your furbabies to clean up after themselves, your next best alternative is a toy chest. These can easily tuck under a bench or aligned neatly in a corner appearing as a simple decorative chest.

SIMPLE STEPS TO SPRING CLEAN YOUR ENTIRE HOUSE

With the flowers blooming and the trees budding, you may feel inspired to “spring clean” your entire home and we’re here to help with a few simple steps. In this blog, we’re breaking down your spring cleaning plans by room and by tasks. You’ll feel accomplished with your fully cleaned home, all year long.

 

Let’s start with the heart of the home, the living room + dining room:

●       Refresh your decorations. There’s no need to buy a new couch or new rugs when you can enhance your current space with small treasures. Add new throw pillows on the couch or picture frames around the room to create a feeling of “newness.”

●       Clear off all of your table tops and dust them well.

●       Vacuum and get your carpet cleaned. Carpets are the keepers of all dirt and outside pollutants so it’s important to give them a deep clean once a year.

 

Now for your personal space, the bedroom:

●     The temperatures are warming up which means it’s time to lighten up your bedding. Trade your wool comforter for a lightweight and breathable down comforter.

●     Get rid of excess clothing. As seasons change, so does our wardrobe. Now’s the time to remove any and all clothing that no longer serves you. The best part is, you can donate the clothes or give them to someone in need. Not sure what to get rid of? A good rule: If you haven’t worn it a year, it’s time to part ways.

 

One clean kitchen coming right up:

●       Do you have expired foods in the pantry? Go through cupboards and your fridge to throw out all expired foods.

●       Nothing makes a kitchen feel new like freshly mopped floors. Sweep or vacuum the floors first to pick up any crumbs and then mop. Pro tip: Use a scented soap like lemon to have the entire house smelling clean.

●       The stove top is another prime area for bacteria to accumulate. Get a baking soda multi-surface kitchen cleaning spray and get to scrubbing.

 

Finally, let’s take it outside:

●       Welcome your guests with a new welcome mat. Mats get dirty and dusty fast so now is a great time to update.

●       Spruce up your garden and clear it of weeds and dead leaves.

●       Spray down your outside furniture. They will shine bright when the sunshine arrives.

Lakeside Living at The OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show

The novelty of tiny houses is still making waves in the housing market across the US. Many small homes are a great fit for aging family members or for young people looking for affordable first homes. Oak Creek Homes in Fort Worth, TX has embraced the tiny house movement, but rather than following a “pre-fab” style, they’ve grown it into something much more comfortable and sophisticated. The Smart Cottage is a fully outfitted model is coming to The OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show.

By definition, a “tiny house” is a home under 300 square feet, and while Smart Cottages don’t exactly play by the same rules - they stretch the definition of a tiny home to meet lots of unique housing needs. Does your dog’s home live up to your standards? Maybe an upgrade is in order. At the Cleveland Home + Remodeling Expo, March 20-22 at Cleveland’s I-X Center, has something for everyone – including man’s best friend! 
 
 
Expo visitors will be able to stroll along Doggie Drive, sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Greater Cleveland, and bid on their favorite doghouse built by juniors and seniors at Cuyahoga Valley Career Center. Students, working in teams, were given a $200 budget to design and build a fur-tastic living space for medium- to large-size dogs.
 
These one-of-a-kind dog houses will be a hit with your favorite canine, and also help support Cuyahoga Valley Career Center students taking classes in architecture/engineering; heating/air; electrical; and construction trades.
 
Cuyahoga Valley Career Center serves more than 25,000 students K-12 through its career development program and nearly 3,000 adults annually from 25 different Northeast Ohio communities who seek training.

Bunk Bed Build-A-Thon in Support of Sleep in Heavenly Peace

Not only can guests at the Fairgrounds Southern Ideal Home Show, GET great ideas, products and inspiration at the spring show- they can also GIVE to local kids in need.

 

For the first time, the show is hosting a Bunk Bed Build-A-Thon along with charity partner Sleep In Heavenly Peace. This special onsite project will raise funds, recruit volunteers, and build beds for local children in need. At the show, guests can even lend a hand and give their carpentry skills a try!

Across the US, too many kids go without a bed—or even a pillow—to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors, which has adverse effects on their physical and mental health. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a group of volunteers dedicated to finding those children who are sleeping on the floor or otherwise unwanted conditions and delivering hand-built bunk beds free of charge.

 

Each bed that SHP delivers to a child sleeping on the floor offers comfort and safety. Often times, the kids who get our beds have never owned a bed of their own. 10th Annual OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show

Warm, sunny weather is finally coming back around, and means that garden tools, home improvement plans, and outdoor accessories are itching to make their spring debuts. At The OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show, visitors can get a jump on spring cleaning, home improvement and landscaping lists with the help of more than 250 vendors and experts.

 

There is always a huge variety of projects, experts and topics to explore at the show, but there are certainly some crowd favorites, including:

- The Outdoor Recreation feature will help guests plan for their next big adventure.

- The fully landscaped Garden Center offers everything from equipment to grow your own food, to flowerbed hacks.

- The Cooking Stage recruits chefs from some of our top local restaurants to teach everything from basic cooking techniques to their most ambitious recipes.

- Lakeside Living is a 3,000 square feet fully outfitted lake side retreat, complete with a Smart Cottage, porch swing, landscaping and a water feature.

- Pet Plaza will offer everything from built in home features for pets, to products and of course lots of treats for your pups at home.

 

The OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show offers some special perks for tradespeople, military personnel and first responders. Friday is Trade Day so all tradespeople with a valid ID or business card get into the slow for free. Sunday is Hero Day so all veterans, active military personnel, police, fire and first responders are admitted for free.

 

The OKC Home and Outdoor Living show is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year! For a whole decade, this annual event has helped Oklahomans transform their homes and conquer major DIY projects. Celebrate this milestone and prepare for your own home projects March 27-29!

Oklahoma City foodies, rejoice! The OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show is putting on a whole weekend of live cooking demonstrations, hosted by chefs from some of your favorite local restaurants. Programming for the live cooking demonstrations is varied, so whether you’re coming to learn the basics, or you want to take on a major culinary challenge, you’ll find what you need here.  

The OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show returns March 27-29 and is setting up a fully functional kitchen set inside the Bennett Event Center at the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds. It will be complete with a staging area for chefs to prep the final versions of their dishes, and an overhead camera and screen so the live audience can catch every detail of these tasty creations! Best of all, each cooking demonstration will end with samples of their dishes, so come hungry.  

Dale and Carrie Spoonemore are among the presenters, and they bring something very special to the Cooking Stage. The Spoonemore family developed the ap “From Seed to Spoon” to help people grow their own food at home. Since 2015 the family has been eating their own home-grown food, all from a suburban back yard.! They’re coming to The OKC Home + Outdoor Living Show to discuss how they incorporate their own, freshly grown herbs into their cooking.

The Spoonmores are big proponents of making simple dishes special with fresh herbs. The couple recommends prioritizing chives and oregano because they are the two easiest herbs to grow, and the most versatile in your cooking. A simple plate of roasted veggies, mashed potatoes or scrambled eggs soar to new culinary levels with a few fresh cut herbs sprinkled on top. The couple has young children who have learned to appreciate vegetables thanks to their generous usage of herbs in their cooking.

The OKC Home +Outdoor Living Show’s Cooking Stage will have seating and each demonstration will last about an hour. There is no additional charge to attend any of the demonstrations, however they are very popular so consider arriving early to get a good seat.

Celebrity Q&A: Ty Pennington

First known for his work as carpenter and designer on Trading Spaces and later as host of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Ty Pennington will be appearing on the Main Stage at the Cleveland Home + Remodeling Expo on Saturday, March 21. Before he visits the Expo, he’s sharing some home project tips and ideas with us!  
 
 
Best décor or home improvement app folks don’t know about? 
Ty: You can’t beat Houzz or Pinterest for getting the design inspiration, and if you want to verify resources for a project Porch.com is a great place to start.
 
Any simple tips for upgrading a small bathroom? 
Ty:  Storage is always the problem in any small space, so look to resources that can help you to maximize that part of the room. Boats, ships, and small apartments in Tokyo are great places to look for inspiration – seriously. They use space in the most efficient way out of necessity.
 
What home trends are you loving? What styles do you think will emerge in the future? 
Ty: I’ve always been drawn to Scandinavian and mid-century design. I like seeing how those have not only stood the test of time, but they’ve also morphed into a modern-day design without losing their aesthetic. Simple, functional, but always inviting.
 
What’s your favorite paint color?
Ty: I favor neutral colors, and then add color with textiles and artwork. I’m not the guy that is painting the wall orange – but I will use a bold wallpaper on occasion.
 
Wallpaper: love or hate? 
Ty: I think wallpaper has come a long way from the dated florals and borders that we saw in homes for the better part of the century. I also like how peel and stick options have become available so that you aren’t as committed to a look as you would be even if you painted it. Taking it a step further is the option to customize the wallpaper with your own designs, images, or photographs. So yes, I say love it. 
 
What’s your favorite part about speaking at a home show? 
Ty: Actually attending the home shows is amazing because I get to see what’s out there or coming onto the market. But speaking is great because, well, I love hearing people’s stories about their own DIY experience or how they were affected by EMHE or my ADHD.

Refreshing greenery. 
The trees are blooming, but what about having some indoor greenery? If you’re not confident in your indoor gardening skills, there are many plants that are easy to maintain available. Welcome the promise of a new season with a fresh and invigorating piece of art or wall décor. Solon, Ohio – February 5, 2019 – Marketplace Events, the largest producer of business-to-consumer home shows in North America, announced today that the company has partnered with skilled-trade advocate Mike Rowe, best known as the host and creator of Dirty Jobs, to promote its 60+ home shows.

The company will also work closely with Rowe’s Foundation, the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, which awards Work Ethic Scholarships to students pursuing a career in the skilled trades. Since 2008 when Rowe launched the foundation, he has led the charge to help close America’s widening skills gap – an issue directly impacting the home improvement industry. 

According to the Associated General Contractors of America, 75% of construction companies nationwide are having trouble finding qualified workers. “It was Mike Rowe’s work with his foundation and the fact that he has become an important voice in sounding the alarm around the skilled trade gap, that drew us to this partnership,” explained Tom Baugh, CEO of Marketplace Events. “We work with 20,000+ companies each year – primarily small, locally-owned home improvement business owners who exhibit at our shows.
